wow I'm going with a group of people to see it - usually only 2-3 people come to the movies to see a movie but this movie is going to be awesome!

...wow though I'm reading that GAF thread and it's tearing down the hype. :(

Why?  Save for two people that have seen the film on there, everyone else enjoyed it?  Walking in with low expectations is best, though - it won't match Spidey 2.

Hah, probably!

If you're a legitimate Spidey fan and won't go because of mixed reviews - that's pathetic.  Pretty much nobody has called it awful or bad, even AICN's super nitpicky comic book guy review.  And almost all the reviews, even the negative ones, have called it as good or better than the original.  So that's the bar I have for it.  Going in believing that it'll top Spidey 2 is going to only lead to disappointment.

I don't care about the critics though. My problems lie in some of the things we know about the movie so far. The New Goblin, Sandman's connection to Uncle Ben, emo Pete, etc. That stuff turns me off. I'll most likely go on Sunday

So you're basing your decision on things you've heard instead of seen?  That's still ridiculous.  Furthermore, all of the things that you complained about are actually not being written as the negative parts of the movie.  Almost all reviews have cited as Franco outperforming Maguire in his new role, and the Goblin as a cool character (and he is not referred to as "The New Goblin" in the film) and Sandman's connection to Uncle Ben was pulled off pretty damn well apparently (Pete's still at fault here).  Even "emo" Pete has been written as one of the most fun parts of the film.

I could understand if you thought the running time was too long, Venom didn't get enough screen time (but then I'd call you a loser, because Venom fans are losers), the film had too many villains, certain characters weren't fleshed out enough, etc.

Did you read my post? I not only said I don't care much about critics, all of my critisizms are from things I've seen in the trailers. You have it backwards.

Right now the movie's RT is more than 10 points below Superman Returns, so even the critics don't seem impressed. Not that I'm that interested in their opinions, but it's odd to see such a drop in critical reception from the first two movies. Maybe things will even out by next week, we'll see

I haven't seen 2 and considering 3 is worse than 2 then I have no good reason to see 3 before I see 2.

I watched the scene with Spiderman saving Gwen from falling and my face was like  :S.
The CG was awful. Though Venom from what I saw looked good.

Not really.  It's following a hugely successful and beloved sequel - and it doesn't match up.  If you read the reviews, it's apparently as good as one, but hitting that bar is no longer as lofty as it was back in 2002.

You wouldn't like it anyway! Raimi-Man is not your cup of tea, but that's cool.  That said, I watched the original the other day, and it hasn't held up as well as I remembered.  Still a solid, fun movie, but pretty short and the pacing is fractured.

One could make that same argument about Spiderman 2 following up the first, which was praised.

S1: 90
S2: 93
S3: 64

Yeah, that's not a good thing. One of the only things I find interesting about critical scores is trends for sequels.

I love what Raimi has done visually with Spider Man and his casting for villains has been inspired. But everything else is pretty awful. I remember Spidey being a wisecracking badass .. not an emo schlepp. So many of his ideas/gimmicks are shoehorned into his movies, it feels like I am watching a collage of scenes instead of a coherent story. It's like going to a Prince concert and he plays 30 seconds of each one of his songs. It tickles your ass, but fails to hit your g-spot.

I was an avid reader in the 80's. Even used to buy all the Marvel Team-Up's (an awful mag, really) just because it had Spider-Man. So, if for any movie I could forgive some of its shortcomings ... this would be the one.

I just read Quint (from AICN's) review of SM3 and it pretty much confirms what I expected. He was a guy that completely gushed over SM2 also.

Except Spider-Man 2 was better home schooled kid.

I was an avid reader in the 80's...

Despite the fact that you're from a different demographic, I don't think a one-liner spouting crime fighter would do well on the big screen.  It works in the comics because Spidey is almost never in danger, and most of the wisecracks are horribly corny to boot.  It's the one element that I'm glad got muted with the shift to the big screen and newer comics.

I pretty much discount reviews where the reviewer talks about how he would've done it.  That means he already had visualized the film in his head before sitting down.  I like genuinely good critiques (like Roeper's) and that's not one of them.

As much crap as some of my friends are giving me for not being OMG hyped about the film, I'm glad I'm going in with lowered expectations. I expect it to be good (just not as good as Spider-Man 2) and it sounds like I will get what I expect. Can't be disappointed with that.

Yeah, I think despite the fact that it might be as good as the original, everyone walked out of Spider-Man pleasantly surprised that it did not suck.  This installment does not have that luxury - its greatness or bust for a lot of folks.  And I think it'll fall short of that.  I'm just looking for a solid Spidey outing and I think I'll be happy.  Plus, certain things, like the Saturday Night Fever montage and such sound so Raimi that I'm already giggling in anticipation.

There almost as good as the SHH! reviews on their board.  I love it when a comic book movie comes out, because you have the diehards that are like, "OH. MY. GAWD. GREATEST MOVIE EVAR!!!" and then guys who frequent the boards for other superheroes come in and go, "THIS MOVIE WAS AWFUL! KILL YOURSELF THE MOVIE SUX GO SEE THE DARK KNIGHT!"

It's like a battle of rabid fanboys.

I'm not either.  I took a ridiculous amount of heat for liking the original on GAF back in the day, and remembered people rallying around a lot of the Spidey crap slinging from DRINKY.  It wasn't 'till Spider-Man 2 that people stopped giving me crap for liking the series.

IMO Spider-Man 1 was a very good super hero movie. It's place in history as the first huuuge blockbuster of the post 911 world is already set. To me it's one of those comic movies that actually got the characters right. I love it.

I remember loving Spider-Man 2 from the beginning, and actually cheering in the theater with the other comic nerds when MJ uttered the "go get em Tiger" line. But a few years later I mellowed down on the movie, and actually claimed Batman Begins was much better. But then I watched the movie again last Thanksgiving, and was once again reminded how great it was.

So yeah, I love the series, and I love the character. Of course I was very excited at the prospect of Spider-Man 3, and even more so when the Venom rumors started. But my excitement slowly deteriorated at time went by. Like the PS3, for me Spider-Man 3 seemed to give me bad vibes and news nearly every month lol. Oh well I'll still see it, probably on Sunday

Dude, save for GAF (which is humorous in its trashing, if anything), nobody is saying its bad.  Disappointment is the reoccurring theme.  But if you liked the original, then this is the same caliber apparently, and go in with modest expectations.  Spider-Man 2 has been hailed by many as the greatest comic book film ever, and this one is nowhere near that.  I mean, it kind of sucks that Raimi couldn't hit that mark again, or even come close to it, but if you're going to shun what is being referred to as an entertaining film because its not as good as the previous installment - fuck that noise.

And regardless of what you think about Spider-Man, it got picked to pieces on GAF, especially for its pro-American PROPAGANDA and bridge sequence with the Goblin.  I remember it being thoroughly trashed.  It's a good, fun ride, but it doesn't rank as the best or one of the best.

My expectations are rather low for this outing and I know what I'm getting into, plus I like some things I've seen so far - so I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.  How it ranks to the other two films, we'll find out on Saturday.  The reader reviews on some other geek forums, like CHUD, sound more in line with what my reaction for the film will be like.

Every review from a Venom fan is ridiculous.  He is not a deep, multi-layered character and he was never created that way.  McFarlane wanted to do a creepy monster that could match skills with Spidey, not to create some masterful character about duality and anger and innocence and any of this garbage that Venom fans heap upon the character's origins.  All Spidey 3 reviews on SHH! from Venom fans (they all have user names like VENOM4EVA) are like this:

wtf this movie was a dispoinmtnet venom is only in teh end he shuld of have been in teh entire movie fuk teh sandman he is one dimensional instead of charakter memoments raimi shouldve focused on MORE VENOM

Haha, reading the reactions on GAF is priceless.  Some of the jabs are pretty well written too.  I think the sad thing is, you've got people that hated Venom being in it, wanted Venom to be in it more, hated Venom and Sandman, wanted more drama, wanted less drama and/or just wanted another movie altogether.  Raimi tried to please everybody and as so, looks like he did nothing spectacularly.

Well, my Spidey love got the better of me, and I cracked: we switched our tickets from Monday night to opening night, tonight. I will be seeing this bad boy in about 11.5 hours from now!

And Ihave absolutely no clue how I am gonna react to it. All the reviews of other peeps I respect have been pretty much evenly split between love and hate. One thing I keep hearing is that Raimi has balls the size of NYC for putting in the dance scene. Cant wait to see that. Cant wait to see this movie. All the GAF bashing makes me want to see it and hopefully love it all the more.

GAF collectively has the worst taste in the world so the fact that they hate it makes me love it.

Thanks in advance to all you spidey fans. Cause all of today/tomorrow I'll be working for time and a half.

I overall had fun with it–but it really is a huge mess.  Don't think that it's not, because it really is.  The whole middle segment is just about the funniest sequel to Anchorman I've ever seen.

At one point during the film, about an hour and a half into it, my heart literally flanked, dunno if it was right or left, after a horrible, tragic thought crossed my mind: I realized that I was actually waiting to see the credits. I was wanting Spider-man 3, a movie I've been anticipating for years, to just end. At that point I started feeling sick and the movie kept progressively getting worse and worse with no redemption in sight.

It's still not X-Men 3 terrible, but I'm feeling a bigger sense of disappointment because I haven't liked ANY of the X-Men films so whether X3 was good or not was something I didn't really give a shit about, but to see the third, supposedly biggest installment of a franchise with a great beginning and a perfect middle turn out like it did... it may not be as bad of a film as X3 but it's surely far more disappointing.

Like I said on GAF it just felt like Raimi didn't care if it was good or not. If he comes out and says that he directed it based on a bet he lost, I'd believe it. This is one of those movies that should have been rejected before it left the studio.
