Whats awesome for under 1300 bucks. I dont mind building my own, and dont mind buying prebuilts.

Hit me.

I was thinking of using a few of my hdd's but they arent Sata's do new mobo's even use non sata drives now? I've got a 250 and a 300gb. So the rest can be spent on the goodies that go in the box. As well I dont have a monitor currently but would like a LCD.

Old people don't buy computers.

My grandfather does he's got a nice 1.8ghz dual core 2gb ram, he bought back in Febuary. Pretty bitchin rig, but mine will be even better.

Ok so TVC is being an ass.

Anyways this is what I got so far:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4ghz
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819115003
$226
HSF: Zalman
Mobo: Asus P5B Delux/Wifi
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813131028
$193
Ram: Corsair XMS2 2x 1gb DDR2 800 (gonna get 4gbs)
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820145034
$159 for each 2pk 50 dollar rebate
Graphics Card: Saphire ATI 1950XT 256mb
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814102067
$179.99 (dont know about this)

Thats most of the core stuff. I dont know shit about PSU's and cases. I dont want a tower, but i'd like a media center like setup. Whats some good suggestions for something that can stay cool? And what type of PSU's are good?

Suggestions?????????

First of all:  Fuck your fat, stupid ass.  I wasn't an ass at all to you this evening.

Second, what do you mean by a media center-like setup?  There's no way you're going to get a big Zalman in one of them tiny boxes, and 1950s generate a lot of heat.  And I think that RAM might, too.

On irc i tried asking you. Sorry bro

By media center I mean something thats like those old desktop setups. they lay flat instead of vertical.

something like this:

I'd wait a few months and see who ends up being the winner in the current round of video card wars.  Or I'd wait until 3.0ghz quad cores were more economical.

I don't pay attention to part prices when I'm not getting ready to buy, so I can't really name specifics without tooling around for an hour.

Ah boo then dangit. I wish those things were economical. A 3.0ghz quad core would be swank. I cant afford a processor thats that much. So i have scaled back my "needs" to a dual core since my quad core went up in price 100 bucks. I dont really want to wait to build a system especially with those low ram prices (whats up with that) like i've never seen before.

I just found out today that you can get an Intel quad core for around 530.  Are you interested? I kinda have that upgrade itch again even though I've only had my Core 2 Duo for 6 months.  My core 2 duo is an awesome overclocker though.  It's 100% stable at 3.6ghz.

How much are 3.0 Ghz dual cores?

I mean, I hate to niggle on the mhz, but for programs that require power, but lack multicore support, them extra mghz will still help in the long run.

Smooth Groove:  I'm already on 4 cores.  I am slightly tempted to go to octo-core, but I won't buy quad chips until they are cheaper and at 3Ghz.

2.9ghz dual core extreme costs 900 bucks or so. quad core 2.4ghz was $429 but now its 530.

On the same motherboard?  Is that better than one quad core?  I wouldn't even care about quad core if not for the extra performance in Supreme Commander.  I don't even play that game but I like having a PC that is at the top of benchmarks.  Nerds.  LOL

One quad core would be better, but they weren't on the market at the time.  There's a performance hit due to synchronization when it has to coordinate between both processors, but it's still more powerful than a dual core machine.  Aside from SupCom, there are very few apps that need to be using both processors at the same time right now, so the perf hit rarely ever comes into play.

It's a sata spec for portable and external hard drives.  You really don't need to worry about that since USB external drives are still perfectly fine.  If you ever buy an eSata hard drive, chances are it will come with the cared you need to use it.  It is much faster than USB and Firewire, but since external drives are mostly used for archival shit, it doesn't mean a whole lot.

Are you using Intel or AMD?  I didn't know that Intel allowed 2 dual cores on 1 motherboard.  Can't you just overclock the q6600 to 3.0ghz?  Quad cores are harder to overclock but 600mhz shouldn't be too much trouble.

They are Intel Xeon 5300 "Clovertowns."  It's technically server hardware, so multiple sockets aren't rare.  If I did go octo, I would also have to get Xeon, not C2D.

Do they basically perform the same as Conroes?  Using server hardware to play games is pretty hardcore.

It's basically the same tech as C2Ds, just with the added amenities of server hardware, like reliability and and an emphasis on power saving.

And when you have a considerable amount of power on your hands, you learn to use what's available.  I very rarely shut anything down, even when playing games (except SupCom :p).  Last night I had a game of Titan Quest minimized for like 2 hours because I forgot I started it.  The RAM on my machine becomes a bottleneck before my processor ever does, and to me, that means I'm futureproofed for a good while.

I also like playing with video, which is still a performance hog.

While AMD AM2+ processors are due out in Q3, Intel announced another plan on price reduction just 3 months after the previous drop on April 22. With a remarkable cut at 50%, AMD is facing another harsh battle with Intel.

As reported before, Intel has had hinted a price drop in Q3, expecting a second price drop someday in August and September. However, the exact date turns out surprisingly on July 22 as the first hand information we have received. Undoubtedly, the move give certain impact on the sales of AMD processors. Not until the release of next-generation AM2+ processors, it’s hard for AMD to get profit from their existing products.

In the most updated plan, Intel Quad-Core Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB) will be further cut to $266, a second drop within 4 months since its release on March with 68.7% accumulated price drop. For the original price segment of Core 2 Quad Q6600, now it will be replaced by a new model Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB), pricing at $530.

For the mainstream desktop processors, while Core 2 Duo E6000 family has no price update information at this moment, its relatives, Core 2 Duo 6050 family which features 1333MHz FSB releasing on July 22, has got a very impressive price advantage. The 3 models including E6550 (2.33GHz), E6750 (2.66GHz), and E6850 (3GHz) are only priced at $266, $183, and $163, around 40% cheaper than its 1066MHz version. Together with the new release of Bearlake featuring 1333MHz FSB, the both releases are expected to have great sales.

JULY 22nd
Thats my day, thats when I buy a new processor. Those prices are just perfect damnit.

TVC what do you think? The new AMD's gonna compete?

AMD will no longer exist in a year and a half.  They borrowed more than 2 billion dollars last year to buy ATI (who just released a really shitty line of cards), and they are currently in debt to the tune of about 3 billion dollars.  Once the ATI 2000 series bomb is taken into account, they will be scrambling.  I'm not betting money on their new processors being too hot either - they aren't partaking in the "core wars" and to match the leap made by Intel would take a phenomenal breakthrough.

Intel has killed AMD dead.  If AMD had not begged for money to buy ATI, they might've had a shot of surviving into 2009.

As it stands, I expect Intel to eventually bail out AMD, similar to MS bailing out Apple in the late 90s.  In both situations, letting their biggest competition die would leave them wide open for antitrust suits.  Intel has partaken of some shady operations over the past 7 years (though not as many as they did during the height of the 90s pc era), and I bet they are too smart to leave themselves too open for assault.

For reference, AMD's stock value has dropped by more than 50% in the past year.  Intel's has remained stable.

But the prices man. Is that ace or what? Its gonna be hard to decide between a 3.0ghz dual core 2 and that 2.4ghz quad core. Now if only DDR3 ram prices drop i'll be happy as hell. Glad I waited one more day before buying ram.

I meant DDR2 cant edit posts. But I wanted to get something faster than the normal DDR2 800. There is DDR3 on the horizon though it uses the same type of ram thats in graphics cards. Which is hella fast.

I stoped carring as well two years ago when i got a laptop but now I'm having to "relearn" some thiings. So many advancements.
