New Square-Enix next-gen RPG: The Last Remnant
« on: May 07, 2007, 08:06:13 PM »
Game Informer got the scoop on a new Square Enix RPG called The Last Remnant. It's the long rumored title running on the UE3 engine, but the platform has yet to be clarified. Probably a 360/PS3 multiplatform release, but you never know.

Spring 2008 - Next Generation Consoles - 1 Player RPG

One thousand years ago humanity came into contact with Remnants. These magical fragments of a bygone era were once used to promote peace across the world. Soon, as the rift grew between those who ruled and those who obeyed, the remnants ceased being instruments of balance, and instead became paths to immeasurable power. Where once there had been peace, only bloodshed remained.

- Released simultaneously in U.S. and Japan

-Two prominent characters each created to appeal to a specific territory. Rush Sykes will appeal to JP gamers, and "The Conqueror" for Western Audiences. Game won't force you to choose which character you play.

- Remnants vary in size and can take the form of machines, beasts, and weapons.

- 4 races revealed: Mitra (humans), Yama (Large fish-like beings), Qsiti (small humanoid lizards), Sovanni (four armed cat like creatures)

- Battle System will not be passive and will include QTEs in certain instances. Fights still take place in a turn based frame work.

- This is the first UE3 game SE will be releasing. Graphics look great so no worries there.

- Directed by Hiroshi Takai

For some reason the first bits of info give me a Code Age Commanders vibe, which is not a good thing at all.

I primarily posted this here for Himuro's response, since he's banned from GAF.

On one hand it's cool because I'm glad they're making something new for a change. On the other hand...the game's description thus far isn't so interesting, but that's probably due to the limited amount of details we know. I'll wait to pass some judgement on it until I see some videos of this battle system.

The fact it has qte excites me enough since I love qte and I even made a thread at gaf where I would love turn based battle systems infused with qte, so that definitely has my interest.

There are a lot more details, I just didn't want to copy the whole thing from GAF.

I need to see some screens. Shouldn't take too long until someone uploads some scans on to the web...

Oh, I read the other parts at gaf as well. It seems neat I guess.

I'm surprised they're not on OA yet.

I'm thinking someplace like Jeux-France who's known for stealing scans and passing them off as their own.

Then how come they always make threads about Japanese megaton and post scans for those all the time?

Because there's pics? What megatons are you referring to. Scans implies pics. I just said in my previous post -- there are no pics for this new game surfaced yet, so OA gives zero fuck. I didn't read that giant GAF thread, but distantmantra would have posted something if there were scans.

There are plenty of pictures in the article, apparently. No scans at GAF though, since it's from a US mag. I'm sure they'll be up later tonight somewhere. I've braved numerous Gamefaqs boards and looked around Jeux-France (who does have an article about TLR), but no scans yet.

Square lost my interest ever since FFX and onward. They should get back redeeming the FF series.

I disagree. First and foremost, the Square we all know and love died when they stopped making new rpg IP's, and milked FF. Why would you want them to redeem FF when there's so many more worthy game series worth revisiting or worth creating?

Not a good track record.

Sounds like the guy has been relegated to working on FFXI for the last few years.

I just wish they'd get back making more FF's like 7 8 and 9. Those 3 all resembled eachother in some way and I loved it. Heartbreaking how the series turned out on the PS2.  Pretty sure it will continue that shitty trend on the PS3.

Looks pretty decent, and I love turn based battle systems, but I don't have much faith in the Square side of S-E anymore :(

I was actually thinking that transcribing the article was against TOS. I'm surprised it was up as long as it was.

It's not even a direct copy. It was a summary of the important parts. Why not ban previews in general? WTF?

Maybe they're getting pressured by publishers. Who knows.
