Jon Favreau is directing (he wrote and starred in Swingers, directed Made, Elf, Zathura and some TV shows).  He was also played Foggy in another Marvel production, Daredevil.  Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby came up with the story and initial script, and they also worked on Children of Men and First Snow.  It has two more script doctors credited, but they look like first time bananas.

Robert Downey Jr. is starring as Tony Stark/Iron Man, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard (Jim Rhodes!) rounding out the cast.

At the very least, it's going to make for a very interesting film.  The cast is top-notch, and everything I've seen so far indicates greatness.  Jon Favreau is the only weak spot but I'm keeping my hopes up.

It's rare to see a director catering so much to the fans.  The costume, the casting, everything seems geared towards making this palatable do the diehard Iron Man fans.  I just hope this translates into a great movie and boffo box office.  Filmmakers should be rewarded for trying to remain faithful to what makes the characters great.

Arad has nothing to do with Iron Man, though Marvel Studios does. Paramount is still involved though.

No. Only those characters left AFTER they sold rights off before marvel studios began can be used cross over wise. Which does not allow for any fantastic four, x-men, spider-man, daredevil, hulk...etc characters.

This news - which is new to me - makes me feel better about the project. I'm still very iffy about it, but it's good to hear that the director is putting such emphasis on the comic. I'm not one of those guys who wants it to be 100% like the comic. What's important to me is that the movie gets the essense - the spirt - of the comic story right. The Spiderman movies work in part because they just get so much stuff right, mainly the characters.

There might be more than one villain.  I agree that Mandarin isn't a great choice.  Iron Man should focus on the techy sci-fi aspect, Mandarin's rings are too close to the supernatural for my tastes (even though they're supposedly made from alien technology, I think).

Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, The Guardsman (as a rival Iron Man for a competing corporation), or The Living Laser would be great choices for villains.  I hope they start setting up Jim Rhodes as War Machine for one of the sequels.

Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man are way too Cold War to have any relevance today. At least with The Mandarin, China being the next super audiences could fit in with the modern timeline.
