I think I found a reason to vote republican
« on: May 08, 2007, 12:48:33 AM »

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Paul

Quote
Paul advocates the limited role of government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to monetary policies based on commodity-backed currency. He has earned the nickname "Dr. No" for voting against any bill he believes violates the Constitution. In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Paul is the "one exception to the Gang of 535" on Capitol Hill. He has never voted to raise taxes or congressional pay. He has always voted against the USA PATRIOT Act, the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and the Iraq War. Paul opposes illegal immigration as well as amnesty for illegal immigrants. In the May 3, 2007 GOP Debate, Ron Paul stated that as President, he would seek the immediate abolition of the IRS and the abolition of the income tax. As Congressman, he has long fought for the prohibition of direct taxes by repeal of the 16th Amendment which created the income tax.

Yeah, he's pretty much a Lolbertarian and his views are exceedingly marginalized in the party of today.

Sadly, neither one will win their respective nomination.  It'll be Giuliani or Romney vs. Hillary or Edwards, and I will probably not bother voting for the first time ever.  I just don't give a shit anymore, we're fucked anyhow.

Even if you wanted to get rid of income tax it is not a very pragmatic idea.

True, but at least he is bold enough to suggest it.

When you are unelectable you can promise anything you want to because there is no chance that you'll one day have to deliver on those promises.

When president I will give every American male a blow job.

Well, I am pretty much a classical liberal when it comes to economics and am fairly unenthusiastic about lofty ideas of distributive justice. However you have to be nuts to think income tax can be abolished, or to even think such an idea is currently desirable.

yeah I don't get what makes 30-year olds think they're 13 and think OH FUCK TAXES and make a identity (libertarian).  It's really the dumbest political idea I've heard in a while.  People are too dependant on government services and the politicians are fucked over since they don't really have a budget to ruin/boost their credibility so they have nothing to say they can really do for elections.  Unless he expects to win by saying HATE MEXICANS (he won't win).

I paid 20k in taxes last year, and I use no services of the federal government.  I can understand money going to things like national security and what not, but there are no other services I use, so I should not be paying for them.

Also, I strongly disagree with the tax practice of people without children getting punished by taxes solely because they do not want children.  We should not have to pay for the education of the rat bastard children of others at the same time the actual parents are getting tax breaks.  That doesn't even make sense.

What about road services and other city services (state taxes)? I live in a pretty high tax area and it's good to see the money being put to good use, like roads and stuff.  I think you make a good argument overall though.

WA doesn't have state tax, just an especially high sales tax.  I can live with that.

It's about 8.5-9 in california.  Also large tax for real estate (which most likely means a family).  Most of the reasons for taxes are that people only watch 4 seconds of politics on the news and don't really have any idea who's money is going where.

Its honestly getting to the point where i'd prefer a state tax taken out gradually to the sales tax, because I buy things pretty often. Even if it makes end of the year taxes more complicated, adding almost 10% to sale items is fuckin silly.

Move to oregon. We don't have a sales tax and we vote that shit down the second it hits the ballot every time too. It actually helps our economy because all the ppl from WA and CA come down here and buy shit all the time so save money.

I find that state taxes suck more than sales taxes though.  In my experience with state taxes, the majority of the money from your federal return goes right into state taxes.  Plus, at least in PA, we still had a pretty hefty sales tax on top of the state tax.  In most states with state taxes, there are still sales taxes.

Oregon is one of like two states left that don't have that. It's like the wild west out here. Property taxes are kinda high but besides that we're like one of the least taxed places to live in the US.

Do you drive on roads? Will the fire department come to your house if it's burning down? If you get into a car accident, do the cops show up? That's all paid for in part by taxes.

Most of those are paid by state and local taxes.  For the record, I use PT, so I shouldn't be taxed for using roads when I am using an energy efficient alternative.  Similar to public schooling:  why should I pay for it when I am not using it.

Even for the fed funding cops and firefighters get, I'd have no problem with that, similar to paying for national security.
