I thought R.E.M. had better music in the 90s
Whenever they released Shiny Happy People and It's The End of the World (As We Know It) was their better decade. If one song is from the 80s and one from the 90s, well, even better!
That's two decades different, but only a few years apart.
There really shouldn't be any question as to what decade R.E.M excelled in.
Murmur and
Reckoning are both brilliant highlights of 80's alternative and their next few albums:
Fables,
Life Rich Pagent,
Document and
Green aren't anything to scoff at either. In the 90's,
Out of Time is hugely disappointing after
Green, although it produced a few major radio hits, and as good as
Automatic for the People is, they would never reach the heights of their earlier albums again, mostly ranging from only ignorable and irrelevent to downright bad.
