http://www.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/This game is pretty much an unofficial remake of X-Com. It is pretty great, although I think it stays a little too close to the path hewn by X-Com (even the research trees start out identical to the original X-Com).
The key differences, after an hour of play:
1) It takes place on another planet.
2) Soldiers seem to have more action points, which makes the pacing a bit brisker.
3) Tanks are a viable option right from the get go.
4) Bases are laid out a bit differently.
5) There is a soldier ranking system a lil different than X-Com's.
6) Interceptor combat is a tad different, though really not drastically so.
7) There are more slots/options when outfitting soldiers for combat.
This is a closer copy than Luxor compared to Zuma. This is as close to game plagiarism I have seen in an actual commercially released product. Am I complaining? At the moment: FUCK NO! This is the best X-Com game since Terror from the Deep. Not only that, but this is the only X-Com option for us saps on Vista, where the original games no longer run.
So, early impressions are good. The game is highly, highly derivative, but I can forgive that when they haven't made em' like this in over a decade. Check the specs, it runs on most anything. While it definitely looks better than the ancient X-Com, it's by no means a looker by today's standards. It's still all mostly 2d, but it's higher rez.
http://www.gamersgate.com/You can buy it there for 29.99. I have to say I am very happy with the purchase. It's like cracking open X-Com for the very first time again! Maybe a little
too much like that, actually.
