Drinky Crow Gaming Grab Bag, September 06
« on: September 06, 2006, 12:12:13 PM »
Here's some random thoughts on GAMES I've purchased recently:

Guilty Gear Judgment JP -- don't buy the American version unless you absolutely NEED English text. Get the JP/Asian version, which comes with GGXX Slash instead of the earlier #Reload. GGXX Slash on PSP is an improvement over the already astounding #Reload -- the effects and backgrounds are in an even higher resolution, and the load times remain well masked. Slash also nets you ABA and Order Sol as playable characters. The Judgment beat-em-up is loads better than the miserable one in Isuka, but it's still pretty dull as far as BEUs go. I beat it with Ky and while some of the boss fights were neat, beating up bugs and mannequins ad nauseum gets real old real quick-like. Slash, however, is easily the best portable fighting game -- even moreso than Tekken DR. That said, even if you hafta have the American version, #Reload as found in the US Judgment will blow your little fuckin' nerd minds.

Enchanted Arms -- Our pal TVC made me buy this one, threatening to ply me with "the pinkest of pickles" if I didn't. Terrified for the vestiges of my already-compromised masculinity, I took it in the ass from GameCrazy to the tune of $70 rather than risk TVC's "special love sauce". Aside from the ghastly-ass cowgirl loli -- seriously, her design makes me wanna gouge my eyes out with a tack puller -- it's a pretty solid B-list RPG. Grid-based combat for the win. And as MAF said, if m0rphix hates it, that's as good as the Nintendo Seal of Quality -- I don't think ANYONE I know is going to recover from the absolutely fecal explosion of bad design that was Ninety-Nine Nights.

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams -- OMG FUCK AWESOME TOTAL. I'd borrowed TVC's copy and been duly impressed, so it was time to snatch up my own. The graphics are fuckin' astounding -- they spank anything on the Gamecube and most of the stuff on the Xdude. The new controls and combat feel great, although the camera remains typically wonky in that Capcom DMC way. The boss fights are nowhere near as difficult or a tedious as the idiot reviewers made them out to be, and the visual design in the game is staggeringly great. OH TEH NO ANOTHER SAMURAI GAME the journo feggits lamented, but they'll shit their Osh-Koshes for another fucking game starring a fey little elf in tights. feggits.

Been warming up to Disgaea 2, despite the ridiculous loli factor. I hope Hanako dies in a fire. I'm gonna try to beat the game with at least three prinnies among my regulars.

Why haven't you purchased Gradius Collection, Daxter, or Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins, homos? They're still better than anything on the DS.

Totally.

Every time you try to seduce me with your wicked PSP ways, DS brings out the noise, the funk and the GAMES.

It's a MASCOT game that poorly apes the actual sport and is by all accounts shockingly mediocre. Besides, you don't wanna play anything 3D on the DS -- just go buy a PSOne and get REAL games instead!

It'll pin you to the wrestling mat with its sturdy muscular forearms and work its massive vein-throttled platforming pleasure all the way up your squealing DS fanboy ass and in between gasps of excruciatingly wonderful gaming discomfort you'll sob OH GOD I LOVE YOU MEGA MAN

there's a lot of aspects of RPG gaming that Enchanted Arms does really really well

I like the leveling system where you boost characteristic with points that can also serve to learn new magics and skills, and you can buy stuff in order to boost them even at that

if you die in a battle, you can either retry it or reload... very coo, avoids the frustration of having to redo hours of gaming time

most of all, you can save anywhere! this must become a standard feature in next-gen console RPGs... no more backtracking to reach a save point in a hurry before having to leave home

I haven't been playing any games lately :(, we have an N64 in our house and they have a XBOX with like every old game ever on it.  However, they want to pool money to buy a 360.

same. I was really hyped for Oblivion, but the "enemies level with you" bullshit really killed it for me. Enchanted Arms is quite a bit better, for my current preferences. :heart

Funny, when I mentioned the game in #ga you laughed it off as an "FFX Clone".
I think the game looks decent, if I had a 360 I would definitely buy it.

Morphix: Tell me where to buy a good mini-bar, nothing huge, just a small wood one with a dark finish! YOU ARE RICH YOU SHOULD HAVE MINI-BAR

but I don't drink, so I don't need a mini-bar  :P

I haven't play much of it but if you downloaded the demo this is more of the same.  Pretty good racer and I got to buy a Saturn Sky right off the bat :hip  If only a house in Hawaii was really only $150k I might just make this game my reality  :lol

Only $40, must have for racing fans.

This is what happens when you are too busy yakking about the PS3 to notice what is in your preorder pile  :-\

The new twist on Bomberman actually is not that bad, where it fails is there is no offline multiplayer.  I like the gritty new look, I like the health bar hell I even like the cheesy music, but with no offline multiplayer means this game is $40 too much.  I'd strongly advise waiting for a significant price drop before even attempting to check this one out.

Wow, amazing game  :D

The only problems I have with this game are from the limitations of running on the PS2.  I was expecting Shenmue with a mob twist what I got was a game a lot more action orientated.  The story kicks ass, the fighting while a little clumsy is a marked improvement over ShenMue, every bad guy swears constantly and there are enough macho Asian guys to keep waychel happy for weeks  :o   Can't get much better than that, can it?  FUCK NO IT CAN'T!  Sega is back :bow

Wish Yakuza 2 was coming out for the X360 or PS3  :-\

This game is crazy good.  It is just so weird it is hard to describe.

I grabbed a quick video of the 2nd lvl for anyone unfamiliar with the game...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZda4paZGSA

Good stuff, PSP need more games like this.

Picks of the Week are Yakuza and Loco Roco, Sony fans win  8)
