Guild Wars has got me all hott again
« on: May 11, 2007, 09:43:55 PM »
I loaded up Guild Wars after a long vacation, and actually had to wait on my update to load it's been so long. So I get into game, I wonder what is new... and I see my storage QUADRUPLED.  Oh sweet sassy molassy.  That was nice to find. So I quickly cleared the bags of my Dervish and stuck all my pruples and golds in storage.  I also noticed that the UI has been spiced up a bit, but thats minor.  Also, there was some Xunlai Tournament Agent in city and I have no idea what they are for.  I also have two new title tracks, lucky and unlucky, which I already have stats for.  Very odd.  I know theres been a lot of skill changes and tweaks, but theres no way for me to tell what has been changed after all this time. There's probably more new things I haven't noticed yet.

Anyways, when I last played I was stuck on a certain mission.  I go back to it and beat it on my second try this time.  Which lead directly to.. SAND WORM RIDING.  I am Muad Dib beeyoch. Sand worm riding is pretty awesome.  The worm swallows you and you travel inside it and get a set of skills to use that are all sandworm specific.  Plus your health is increased to 3k, which is a 600% increase. I get to the next quest/mission area, join a group because part of the reason I stopped before was no cooperative play and we proceed to bang out the next mission or two, which are all sandworm riding asskicking fun.  I also get to Bone Palace, and buy my Ancient Hood.  10 Platinum =( But now I have all top armor level gear and one nice piece of Ancient gear.  We get to the last mission on Elona and call it quits.  The person I was with warned me that the next mission is one of the hardest in game, especially getting masters.

Today I went back in and tried the mission with a pug, didn't go so well.  We killed Varesh, but died after that.  Got back into a group for a Master's level run and did it with just one death.  Got Master's reward as well.  I am quickly adjustign to actually tanking for people, since I normally make casters and I soloed my Dervish most of the way up to this point.  Avatar of Balthazar + Dervish Armor runes = leather wearing tankmofo.  I had to drop my deep wound attack though for this mission, to have a self heal and lightbringer gaze. =/  I've used mostly the same skill set all the way, a basic mystic sandstorm build.

Anyways now I'm at Gate of Torment and I think nearing the end of Nightfall. I never beat factions, because I just didn't like the town/city area quests and missions. plus channeling Rit is iffy class. I might go do Factions with my Dervish, since its a fun class, but I still dread going through the long corridors of gangs.

Anyways here's my spiffy ancient hood.

I observed some PVP matches today to try to get an idea of whats the flava.  I got a bit confused though.  I understood basic roles of most of the classes I saw, but I noticed casters were carrying shields and spears for a part of the time, which made little sense.  That never happened before.  Maybe it is because certain inscriptions stack? I don't know.  Also, observer mode now has a 1v1 tournament listing and the Hero battles now seem to have their own tournaments.  You register under a character name for your account and you get a personal ranking for Hero Battles.  I haven't registered yet, because once you get out of the GW pvp swing for awhile, you can be pretty lost when you get back.  IE casters wearing shields.

I found out what the Xunlai Tournament Agents are for, and this part is interesting.  You somehow make bets with the Xunlai Tournemanet on who will win the various in game Tournaments, and if you bet on the winning team.. you win in game prizes.  So yeah, it's a betting system ingame, with in game rewards.  I am not sure what the rewards are like, but thats a crazy new idea I didn't know they had implemented.  I haven't figured out how to bet yet though. There will also be new automated tournaments which I know little about, but I bet they have something to do with this.

I tried out a pvp build out of curiosity.  It's a Ranger/Dervish build based upon stacking +damage.  It's favorable winds + read the wind + vow of strength.  I'm critting for 140+, which is huge in the GW scale of things.  In a group setting it could be nice.  The only thing is you can't use any attack skills, so you rely on normal attacks hitting hard.  It's around 70-140 normal hit damage out of a 480hp per player average. Within in a group you'd need a non-vow of strength player on interrupt and I'd need to find some useful skills to repalce what I had at attack skills since I hardly used them.  It would all be situational.  Anet loves Rangers in pvp, so I knew this could be exploitable.  A skill that increase damage 32% right now plus all the other  damage modifiers is bound to be exploited.  The main problem is you can't spike with it and it's unrerliable since it varies in damage.  It's great for a pressure build though.

But still, I love tweaking and perfecting new builds.  It's part of the fun of GW.  Hitting 140+ with ranger bow attacks is just nasty. The quarter of HP mark is the barometer of nasty in this game.  Like phantom pain + shatter delusion, or old school eviscerate.  If you can take out a quarter of life in one blow, then it's good.
