it's directed by a woman.  No way it could be any good.  Also, Bowie's version of the song is the best.

Lost in Translation.

While that movie was awesome, it wasn't due to the direction.  That was all about two actors stepping up and stealing the show, doing it their way.  Hell, Murray improvised most of his dialogue.

The Beatles, or whoever is in charge of it at Apple Records, won't allow their songs to be used in movies, thus the covers.

This is true. I didn't like Virgin Suicides (despite the awesome Heart goodness in the film)

You just helped prove my point.  Anyone that likes that movie has difficulty telling "pretentious" from "good."

I liked American Psycho, Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation.  I'm not so pretentious as to not enjoy them out of spite.  :tophat

Saw this trailer when I went to see SP3. I'd consider seeing it if those horrible Beatles covers weren't being used. It's hard for artists to properly do Beatles stuff.

I lived in Japan  so i was excited to see a movie that showed what it was like. But it didnt, and it was boring.

That because the movies you chose from ddepdiscount arent good movies. You only posted them to make it seem like you know obscure cinema.

That was pretty awful... on top the cheesy covers and "They lived without rules" risible hippie crap the trailer makes me hate the Beatles:/ A great offense.

"I can't be with you with the megaphones this is what I do!"

 But I dig Moulin Rouge...

Bullshit.  I picked those movies because I want to see them and I'm planning on buying them.  I don't give a shit if they're obscure or not.  And if you don't even know what the fuck they are, how do you know they aren't good?

I thought you were being cool lately, FoC, but this post puts you straight back in my shit list.  Asshole.  :maf

If you can't secure the rights to the Beatles recordings, what's the point?

edit:

the movie seems like it is full of one terrible 60's cliche after another.

On the other hand... Evan Rachel Wood gives me ever raging wood.

Looks decent enough. The only 70's hippy kinda movie I've ever really liked has been Almost Famous though.

Because the Bowie version of the title song is the best version anyway.  Also, Lennon bottomed for Bowie.

I was disgusted when I saw this trailer before Spider-man 3.  Absolutely wretched concept.

And Bowie's version of that song is almost as over-produced as the original.  I'm partial to the stripped version on Naked, but the version on Anthology is notable as well.

It's Bowie.  of course it's going to have heavy production.

Cmon, listen to this:

http://indarktrees.com/pics/06%20Across%20The%20Universe.mp3

This is from the era when Bowie was truly figuring out the most interesting aspects of his voice, and it shows here.  Incredible song.  He makes it his own.  Anyone that disagrees is a child molester.

I'm not even saying those movies are all going to be unrecognized masterpieces, I just posted them as movies I want to get during the sale, for various reasons (I want to find out about Mondo film, I want to see some giallos with Morricone soundtracks, I want to see some more Corbucci movies, etc.).  Some of them might be good, some of them might be bad - there's a reason I'm waiting till they're on sale to buy them!  FoC is a prick.

::) I do not think they are the greatest films of all time. Especially Jurrassic park. I mean I love it but its not my favorite. My favorite film is probably RotJ but its not the best film ever. Brazil probably is.

Fiona Apple's take is alright, but "engineered" is a pretty good description of it all.

What I will say of Bowie's version is that he does definitely make it his own.  I noticed last night that he doesn't include the "Jai Guru De Va Om" line and effectively turns it from a guru mantra appreciation song to something more other-worldly, which makes the production more appropriate.  It sounds even better in context of Young Americans.

That said, I still say The Beatles did it best.
