Who here owns a deep fryer?
« on: May 15, 2007, 12:52:25 AM »
Raise your hand.

I haven't touched it in a couple of years.  At least not since moving. I think it may be the cleanup involved.  I do have fond memories of the night I made hushpuppies. Mostly I made onion rings and fries.

Can anybody revive their deep fryer love? It's like an infatuation at first, but then one day it just stops.

I tried making falafels once, but they turned the oil into a lovely, oozing, mush.  No, it was in no way my fault; I refuse to accept blame for that.  It was all the fryer.  Collecting dust on a shelf is it's punishment.

Same thing with waffle irons, too.

Technically there's nothing you can make with a deep fryer that you can't make with a big friggin' pot full of oil.

I'd probably try to make wings in a deep fryer, but I have a feeling they wouldn't match the ones I've mastered in the broiler. Holy shit those are good.

Beignets (or normal donuts)

Whole fried fish.

Shrimp Firecrackers.

Pork (sweet and sour if you want - just add the sauce afterwards).

Calamari.

You can put just about anything into that sucker.

Yeah, like CG said, we make our fried fish in a big pot filled with oil. Same for chicken.

It would probably just be the same if you sliced up some tires and microwaved them.

I have bought a package like that, but it wasn't nearly as good.  Lost all crispiness and was just rubbery to hell.

I have one.

Well, I live in a house that has one. Gram used to use it to make chicken wings every Saturday night. She'd give their chihuahua the leftovers. He weighed like 20 pounds. True story.

tuna and lobster: the only things from the water that I'll dare eat.  calimari is horrible.  My mom tricked me a few years ago because she thought my distaste for seafood was in my head.  So she brought me calimari and told me it was chicken, I took a bite and spit that shit in her face and said "Bitch, this isn't chicken?  Do you think I'm black or something?  Get that shit outta my face"

Lobster is good, but tuna??

Did you get those shitty tuna sammich school lunches?  The tuna came in a football slab? It stuck together like playdough and slowly absorbed the bread around it. *shudder*I hated that. You coudln't even trade that shit for a single handipack cracker.

Ever since I drank a tuna shake (tuna in mixer, blend with water...omfg) after a training session, I am not eating that shit for a long time again. That was seriously the worst thing I ever ate, right after chocolate milk mixed with fanta.

Deep frying in general gives me the health heebie jeebies.  :o I thought about getting one just so I could do proper Belgian fries for traditional preperation of moules-frites and steak-frites, but as it turns out I found a roasted potato recipe that tastes as good and is way healthier (in small amounts, after all they ARE potatoes).

A proper wafflemaker and a raclette set are my two novelty kitchen items.
