What do you think about extras on dvds?
« on: May 15, 2007, 01:41:51 PM »
In the Blade Runner thread they were discussing dvd extras and I just had to ask. I rarely ever watch the extras in dvds. It annoys me how they subtitle the movies but rarely subtitle extras' interviews. Plus, most of the time the extras don't even feel like they're worth it. They put bullshit stuff like music videos and things people really don't care about in there. Donnie Darko's Directors Cut is a good example. You'd think it'd have some neat features explaining the background of the movie and stuff like that, but no, we get a doumentary by an idiot hipster teen who sent the video in for a Donnie Darko contest and owns 10 million copies of Donnie Darko. I don't care if this kid has Donnie Darko bedsheets and why do things like that get featured in dvds?

I thought The Warriors director cut extras was excellent however, since it not only had subtitles for the interviews, you got to see how the cast has fared in terms of age. They look completely different for the most part. I like cool things like that.

So what do you think of dvd extras? Yay, nay, or somewhere in between?

I like seeing deleted scenes, if they aren't just an extra line of dialogue or something, and bloopers are always fun.

Yeah, I can't stand that. It'll just be an extra line or a 10 second deleted scene and you're like,"What's the point?"

The problem with deleted scenes is that 90% of the time they were deleted for a really great reason. Notable exception being the first Jackass movie. The deletes were better than the film itself.

especially when they include ten minutes of the original scene in the movie that wasn't interesting to begin with to give it some context.

I love extras. Many of my DVDs feature great documentaries about the making of the movie. The LOTR EE for FOTR has so much great content. I love hearing about the making of stuff basically. In fact, does anyone know which actor was originally supposed to play Aragorn, but backed out at the very last minute? Jackson mentions that during one of the docs, but he never says the name of the actor.

The extras for The Departed are also cool; they basically have a couple docs about the real life inspirations for some of the characters, and the mob in Boston. Very cool imo

I told you, I tried but after a couple minutes I wanted to just watch the movie :'(

I'll try again. I'm sure it'll be insightful, I just feel it's a bit distracting

Who watches commentary before they watch the movie
NOBODY OBVIOUSLY LOL

I'm just saying when I watch them for LOTR it just makes me want to watch the actual movie. I know those movies detail for detail so I get confused and angry like "omg where is Galadriel's voice?"  :-\

it's still there. It is done like they are sitting next you having a chat about the movie while watching it with you!

Kevin Smith has the oddest commentaries in the world. On the first clerks commentary Jason Mewes slowly got drunk over the course of the movie and eventually got so drunk he  fell asleep and you heard him snoring.

I don't like people talking while I watch my movies! I'm like STFU OMG. My cousin is like that; he bootlegs everything so he knows exactly what's going to happen next whenever I watch something with him; then he'll be like "lol watch this, she's gonna get raped". WTF stop spoiling shit.

Sometimes they are damn interesting. Christopher Lee is AWESOME on the LOTR EE's. He takes the place of Tolkein and basically points out what got changed from the books and why and his feelings on that and so on.

Poor Christopher Lee though. Tolkien said if there was ever to be a hobbit/lotr movie that christopher lee would be the only one he felt could play gandalf.  :lol

I heard Lee was upset he got cut out of ROTK, but I never saw a good source. I wouldn't be surprised if he was though. But overall the cast and crew got along very well.

Lee is a Tolkein expert. He definitely knows his shit

he was dissapointed but said on the ROTK dvd that it no longer matters since for the most the only verison of ROTK that people will see from now on has him in it.

Depends on the movie and the content. Most "extras" are either standard EPK fare or circle jerk fluff. But when interesting or evokative movies have equally as intriguing and well put together extras/commentaries, then they can be a real treat. I may sound like a broken record here, but Criterion excels at this. Thats not to say that mainstream movies cant have good extras either. The LOTR EEs, as have been mentioned, are stellar, as is the T2: Ultimate Edition, and S-M2 has a fantastic 2 hour long Laurizika documentary, for example.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin has an awesome commentary track. Just figured I'd say that since I just watched it w/ commentary recently. Like I voted, I usually only bother with the extras if I love the movie.

WTF

So I go to Walmart to pick up Pan's Labyrinth and it's fucking $27. I left in disgust; the website said $22. I checked Circuit City and they have it for $30. WTF is this shit? It's more expensive than all the other two disk DVDs out (that are new) like Bond, The Prestige, Borat, etc. I'll chest Best Buy

He was pwned for going to Wal-mart and Circuit City, neither of which advertised a sale price.  Both Target and Best Buy have it for $22.  If you go to BB and grab The Fountain on the same receipt, you get $5 off.
