Portishead defined the genre for most people, but Massive Attack were doing it first.

No option for DJ Shadow or DJ Krush or Attica Blues or UNKLE or most of the Mo' Wax artists make this a really shitty poll though.

From wiki:

Quote
Trip hop (also known as the Bristol sound or Bristol acid rap) is a term coined by British dance magazine Mixmag, to describe DJ Shadow's hip hop instrumentals that (inspired by Organized Konfusion's track "Releasing Hypnotical Gases") changed-up the beat and pallet mid-cut, giving the listener the impression they were on a musical journey. The word trip in the title refers to a psychedelic experience. Later, the Trip Hop description was applied to a musical trend in the mid-1990s; trip hop is downtempo electronic music that grew out of England's hip hop and house scenes. Sometimes characterized by a reliance on breakbeats and a sample-heavy, often moody sound pioneered by Coldcut's remix of Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full", trip hop gained notice via popular artists such as Portishead, Björk, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, Tricky, and rock-influenced sound groups such as Ruby, California's DJ Shadow, and the UK's Howie B.

I'd go with Massive Attack... they still seem to be pretty active; they had a new album and some new singles released last year. Unfinished Sympathy is one of my favorite songs ever, too.

For you I would just recommend Tool.

I hear ya on Unfinished Sympathy (that orchestra at the end always puts a lump in my throat) but man, Massive Attack nowadays sucks. They lost one of the original members and I think that really hurts their sound.

"In the Waiting Line.." would be a good place to start. If you dig that .. get into Sia Furler's solo stuff.

Sneaker Pimps don't belong in the conversation past their first album.  Portishead didn't release enough.  Massive Attack, however, is one of my favorite bands and Protection is one of my favorite albums.  Massive Attack FTW.

Oh, you're looking for fucking music?  Can't get better than Protection and Mezzanine.

UNKLE isn't any one person, it's a revolving group of people.

First album: DJ Shadow on production, with Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, Badly Drawn Boy, Mike D, Lyrics Born, the guy who replaced Cliff in Metallica, etc. etc.

The other albums are the same but the lack Shadow and they pretty much suck. I mean they're not trip-hop, more like... I don't know. House.

----

Oh oh oh, I wouldn't have necessarily categorized this as trip-hop but "Lifestyle Marketing" by Thes One certainly fits the bill.

I used to do a lot of ecstasy with my stripper girlfriend and have all-nighters listening to Sneaker Pimps / Mazzy Star / G Love and the Special Sauce.

mmm I have Mazzy Star on my ipod right now.  Tasty

I totally forgot about G Love and Special Sauce too, I know what I'm downloading when I get home  :-*

As far as music to fuck to, you can't beat the first Rage album for a good hard slamming.  If I'm in a loving mood, maybe some Coldplay (he's a faayg!  :-*) or some Billie Holliday  :-*

The first GnR album is a good fuck album too, damn, I need some ass.
