I fucked up Stalky's Halloween remake enough, so I'm just making my own thread.

Is anyone looking forward to Hostel 2? I am, but through my fingers.

(Quickly: when I was a 6-year-old (that's 28 fucking years ago) my mom used to take me to the grindhouses (now everybody knows what i mean by that) in Milwaukee and we'd see triple features of gruesomeness. In fact, that was the name of one of the flicks, "Gruesome". She also took me to see the original The Hills Have Eyes at a drive-thru once, and that was just fucking a traumatic to my little brain. Now, as much as I hate gory shit, I feel it's my duty to try to sit through them just because. I also click on Mikesphat links and usually feel terrible afterwards)

Anyone who saw the first one knows who lives... Hostel 2 is supposed to take place immediately as the credits roll in the first one. The three main ladies meet ****** on the train, and then whatever the fuck else happens. It's not supposed to have the whoa-did-we-rent-Road-Trip? beginning as the 1st one, this one is actually supposed to delve deeper into the whole human sacrifice trade thing that supposedly exists. There's supposed to be a constant vibe of terror throughout, along with some of the sickest torture shit ever committed to American screens. SPOILER AHEAD, AND IT'S VERY GROSS

I'm not really sure I want to see this. . and I LOVE horror movies.  Shit is just so visceral nowadays.  Hostel was a decent movie but there's a scene in it that still occurs to me sometimes and makes my skin crawl.  In a bad way.

Eli Roth is not very intelligent and a poor filmmaker.  I didn't know that he was one of the guys trying to pick up on the first set of girls in Death Proof, but I mumbled to my friend at one point "That guy is a prime Punchface", which is our term of endearment for douchey motherfuckers that you want to punch in the face. 

I saw Hostel one and was incredibly underwhelmed.  There were some ideas in there, but to say they were poorly executed would be an insult to poorly executed films everywhere.  And I wouldn't want to insult 28 Weeks Later more than I already have.

Cabin Fever actually had it's moments, because I think he wasn't taking himself or his movie too seriously back then, just having a good time making some schlock.  If you ever watch an interview with him, he comes off as this cocky jackass that thinks he's here to reinvent the genre and save movies.  Like, sorry dude.  Just make an entertaining film. 

But anyway, if people enjoy his work good for them.  He's already more successful than FoC will ever be.

Honestly, there was nothing they really could've done to the workprint that would've made it any good.  Even if they added in the off camera violence, it would still, at best, be a lukewarm remake of the original.

hostel 2 was tame. i don't like pointless and highly psychosexualized violence -- let's not add that creepy masturbatory element to misogyny -- but hostel 2 was straight up fuckin' boooo-ring. i didn't even think dawn weiner's liz bathory styled death was particularly noteworthy; sadly, it was more over-the-top ghoulishly funny than disturbing. the eyeball scene in hostel 1 was far worse than anything in 2.

Perhaps I'm a sick guy, but I found that scene to be highly erotic. Probably my favorite death in any movie I've seen in recent years. It's not worth an $8 ticket for me though.

Did I see a tame cut of Hostel 1 or something? I only really remember the main character walking in on a room with the guy blowtorching the eye. You don't really see anything, and her eye is just fucked up on her face. And then whoopie, they cut it off for no reason.

I defended the first film on the grounds that, hey, it's just a movie. Claims of morality and decency have no real weight when BOO LOLZ, it's just a giant practical joke. But going back to the well is offensive, simply because it's indulgent. I'm not offended by the grotesque amount of misogyny on display, nor the over the top violence. I'm mostly offended by a filmmaker hiding behind the lens, pretending that just BECAUSE it's a film, he can run around and make some noise. It's offensive to the form, offensive to the concept of effort and merit and, worst of all, offensive because it's boring.
