PS: The Muppets aren't all that G-rated and Henson was a hippie stoner. The Muppet movie has a bit of video with frank oz in the car as their touring around a town to scope it out for shooting, and he just sort of goes crazy with Fozzie Bear.

In a sense I blame The Muppet's being the great ancestor to everything wrong with children's entertainment today: the overload of celebrity and pop culture references. :'(

chidlrens tv of today is nothing like the muppets

The thing that started today's crappy childrens TV was Disney Channel stuff and the Rugrats. Overly safe and overly poppy. The guest stars on the Muppets were OLD, not young, hip and ready to market. It was ran as a variety show and had guests who probably had done old variety shows. The only pop culture thing they had was the Star Wars episode, but that was because the Henson company was involved in making Star Wars.

Perhaps but I think The Muppets did have a lasting influence even if it was unintended by Jim Henson.

Yeah, apparently Fran Oz swore like a sailor, often in character with his puppets when camera's weren't rolling.

But yeah, Jim was a total hippie. Sesame Street veered into extreme kiddy zone after he died it seemed.

There was nothing with The Rugrats. It didn't always play it safe at all.
