Forgive me Jehovah!

In the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit! :angel

Before I can make a serious decision on this issue, I need to know some things:  how much do you make, and how much does the camera cost?

$10/h : $300 a Week :-\

The camera costs $700 and I've already got $300 towards it. I'm going to try and get lots and lots of overtime though and I work Memorial Day so thats time and a half.

What are you going to do with it once you have it?

Lots and lots of quality pictures!

Some of my family, pets and local landscape. Then, possibly some high res pictures of my junk. Semi-flacid of course.

Blue, why not go for an XT?  The XTi isn't THAT much better.

I was seriously considering it. Some of the features on the XTi (as small as they seem to be) will probably nag me to death and I'll end up with some sort of buyers remorse (even if I shouldn't). I may cave next week though and get an XT since I will probably have enough to get one.

Well, the two big things are the screen size and the MP.

1) The screen:  Definitely bigger and better on the XTi.  The thing is, when you are judging 8-10 mp shots on a tiny screen, the size increase really doesn't help that much.  It's still too small to see details enough to accurately tell if the shot is a keeper or not.  Also keep in mind that the screens aren't viewfinders.  You can only see shots after you have taken them, so it's no help there, either.

2) MP - XT is 8, XTi is 10.  Both of those produce REALLY high resolution photos, and for an amateur photographer, the difference doesn't really mean a whole lot.  Heck, unless you are shooting centerfolds, the difference doesn't mean jack.  You're going to be shrinking the photos down to a printable or web resolution anyway, too.

It also has a larger internal image buffer, which is helpful for faster continuous shooting.  The XT offers that same benefit when paired with a high speed CF card.

Image quality is the same between the two.  The use the same imaging processor.  The XTi is, unsurprisingly, a slightly upgraded XT.  I'm not sure the upgrades are really worth the extra 150-200 bucks, especially if you are buying on a budget.   Save the dollars and get accessories.  Plan on spending like an extra 100 bucks just on accessories, heh.

Hmmm, the only upgrade that I may want is the larger internal buffer but your right about the upgrades being negligable.

I also didn't factor in the accessories. I know I'll have to buy a larger CF card when I get the camera. Choices, choices! I may just go with the XT.

I use a SanDisk Extreme III CF card, which reads and writes much faster than normal CF cards.  I can press down on the shoot button repeatedly and it will take pictures as fast as I press (unless I am using some fancier settings, but I think that's an image processing thing, not a RAM thing).

The SanDisk Extreme IIIs do cost more, but they're worth the price.  If you have a regular CF card around, you can compare and contrast.

I just checked out Amazon and they're selling a 2GB Extreme III card for $40 :drool . The 4giger is around $80

Make sure you get a couple extra battery packs. Nothing is worse than having a great camera, a great shot ready and then finding you got no juice.

Actually, if you're on a budget, you can live with one battery.  DSLRs are much better on batteries than other digital cameras, mainly because the screen isn't on nearly as often.  You get like 300-600 pictures per charge, depending on settings.

I'd still recommend a second battery, but it doesn't need to be a day 1 purchase.

Save yourself a few hundred and get a Pentax K100D. No, seriously.

* It's about $300 less than the XTi - Use the extra cash to buy a memory card, rechargeable batteries, a bag, and a circular polarizer.

* It's got image stabilization built in - This means every lens you stick on it instantly can be image stabilized. This is something that will cost you ~30% more when buying Canon or Nikon lenses, and it's built into the K100D. You'll get better shots, especially in low light, without a tripod. (It's still good to practice your "still shot taking technique".)

* It's compatible with a shitload of Pentax lenses and the kit lens is better than Canon's - Seriously, you could probably go to a pawn shop and get an old Pentax lens that would perform just as well as a Canon lens three times the cost. And in a very unscientific test, i compared the lenses of both my boss and my own 18-55mm Canon kit lens versus my roommate's Pentax 18-55mm lens. Pentax was a hair sharper out of the camera. It's also built much better, with a range scale and much more precise focusing.

* It's 6.2MP - Boo-fuckin'-hoo. You're not going to print out all your shots out at 13x19, and even if you did, they'd be sharper than if you got the Canon (see the second point) and still look good, especially if you do a little post processing. A sharp 6MP shot > a blurry 10MP shot. Besides, you'll be able to cram a lot more shots on a card and a lot more shots on your hard drive.

i love Canons (<3 my 20D) but the K100D represents a great value in DSLRs that i think it makes a great beginner DSLR. The only reasons i can think of for getting the XTi over the K100D would be if money wasn't an issue, you know someone with compatible lenses/gear, or you really know what you need/want and the XTi has something that the K100D doesn't.
