Yeah, it's interesting. I'm excited to see why he's like that. I really like the Joker as just a smilin' nincompoop like in the animated series, but I also like where this is going as well.

What I don't understand is why fans of the '89 Batman are shitting their pants and are so mentally raped by this.

I'll be a bit more blunt here than I was on GAF.

As a fan of the comics, the look is wrong. The Joker is supposed to look visually insane, they have just turned him into your average mutie-looking freak. I understand Batman Begins got a lot of credit for being kinda gritty, but they focused on the wrong aspects of the character here.

But I'll reserve final judgment until we see more.

I don't know. I like both, honsetly–it's all about how you want the Joker to be portrayed for yourself. Me, personally, knowing what Nolan's trying to do, I think this is pretty kickass and fitting. But going back and looking at most of the comics and cartoons, I do like the natural insane grin he has.

This is of course an extremely early shot and honesty awful to form a solid opinion on, so who knows–when he smiles, he may look incredibly fucking awesome and insane. We'll see.

Thing is, the Joker is not strictly a lunatic. He was originally portrayed as a genius in crime, and Nolan as been quoted in wanting to get that across moreso than his insanity. Be sure though, both will be there.

Based on the script leaks I have read it wouldn't make sense for goofy grinning Joker. In the parts leaked his attitude is rather serious (though insane). Hamill/Nicolson Joker doesn't fit in how he sounds in the script.

I agree with this. I loved the makeup job they did on The Joker on the '89 Batman, even though I'm not very fond of that movie (the casting was okay, but there were serious script problems).

I would personally have preferred if they'd tried to emulate Conrad Veidt's look in The Man Who Laughs, which is what Bob Kane originally based The Joker on anyway.

I'm not going to make any judgments until I see more, though. To me, the new look reminds me of Kakihara from Ichi the Killer.

It looks like they're going for the "crazed serial killer with a clown motif" thing more than the " insane clown prince of crime" thing.

It interesting that earlier fake photoshop wasn't that far off.

I'll wait to see him with green hair and suit before making my decision. I think it's a bad teaser picture because a)he isn't smiling and b) the eyes don't have that 'insanity' ie Jack. He looks a bit to emo, maybe Nolan's going for some sort of sad clown thing

The face looks fine, but I think the rest of the costume is going to make or break it. I do like how they're using a characterization of the face to mark his influence on stuff, like the Harvey Dent poster. That looks pretty cool.

Goes with the dark gritty theme. I think a purple snurple, grinning Joker would have looked hugely out of place (well, I think thats the point of the character though).

I think judgement should be reserved until we see some actual full scenes of the Joker in action

I'm less worried about the look and more concerned about the idea of a "serious" Joker.

At the end of the day I have no doubts about the quality of The Dark Knights. It'll be great, and I expect it to be better than BB

Since I posted this at AICN it probably won't last long before the bandwidth is maxed, so let me know what you guys think. I think it maintains the creepiness while keeping the "permanent smile" classic representation intact. Now it looks like he was slashed from the corners of his mouth to the jawbone, as if the "accident" nearly took off the top of his head.

The scattershot approach just looks (to me) like they're trying too hard. "Looka how fucked-up I am! EEEEEeeeeeevvviiillll!"

I enjoyed BB, and I'm sure I'll enjoy this as well, but I laugh every time I read how "realistic" the Nolan Batman movies are, because no matter how desperately they try to inject the real world into it, it still boils down to a dude jumping around in a mask and padded pajamas punching people.

Also, you can tell the lopsided side of the painted smile does curve up. So its not as bad as a plain old round mound of skin.

It's not really a horror movie, it's a period drama taking place in the seventeenth century. It's also a silent movie, so I dunno if it'd be your thing. Conrad Veidt's performance is very, very creepy. I liked it.

Ditto. I think TDK will be good, but I can't wait for the one after this. I mean, they have Harvey Dent in TDK, it has to be a setup for Two-Face in the third one, amirite?
