The black man's movie requirements
« on: May 22, 2007, 02:54:12 PM »
Because of PD's lack of knowledge regarding movies that reflect black people and our culture, I thought I would take the time to make a list of all the noteworthy films that every negro in America must see before he dies.

I would actually love it if the black stallion helped with this list. Beezy, I need some help.

I'll start it off with 10 movies that are ESSENTIAL. The top 10 essentials:

1. The Spook Who Sat By the Door
2. Scarface
3. The Color Purple
4. Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored
5. Coming To America
6. The Last Dragon
7. Bamboozled
8. Night of the Living Dead
9. Antwone Fischer
10. The Mack

While it ISN'T a film, it should be required viewing and or reading in all history classes: Roots.

Next up, we'll have a top 10 list of black comedy films.

Hmmmm nope. Antwone Fischer was directed by Denzel Washington, and based on a book by a black man. It's an amazing movie and it is probably in my top 10. I love that movie so much.

Friday is good, but it's no top 10 imo. It shall be in the comedy list though.

A lot of blacks aren't too big on Godfather. I mean, it's big, but it's not Scarface big.

Juice is dope. What was that Wayans movie where one of them dies when playing basketball?

Naw, that really is a movie. Came out in the 60's. It's a goodie.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a movie that pops up often in black family circles as well. My father made me watch it when I was 8 years old.

How does that make it a black man movie?  The boys from Entourage love that movie, and they are all very white.  Are you implying that it is a black people movie because of the violence?

But if its intrinsic value is that it's a rags to riches story, why are you picking one that is violent and glorifies a violent and vice ridden lifestyle?  I think saying it's a movie every black man has to see is reinforcing negative stereotypes.
