Amistad is not a bad movie. It's not surprising that movies about slavery can get some rather meh reviews; I think Amistad's RT is in the 70s right now, which isn't bad I guess.

It's not necessarily a black people's movie, but it's still a staple. You can't be black and not see Scarface. No way, no how. It's impossible.

But if its intrinsic value is that it's a rags to riches story, why are you picking one that is violent and glorifies a violent and vice ridden lifestyle?  I think saying it's a movie every black man has to see is reinforcing negative stereotypes.

I think if you look at it from a certain perspective, there's something perversely enjoyable about seeing a member of a minority coming from literally nothing and becoming wealthy and powerful simply due to his wits and the willingness to do violence.  He then proceeds to dominate one of the symbols of the ruling class - a beautiful white woman.  It's pure wish fulfillment, and I don't see it as reinforcing negative stereotypes any more than white people pretty much worshipping stuff like The Godfather and The Sopranos reinforces a negative stereotype.

Pacino's portrayal is a little over the top, but there is an incredible level of machismo in the average Caribbean male, much more so than in the typical white American, and probably a lot closer to the typical urban black guy.  I can definitely see how they identify with the character and see the story as being a sort of power fantasy.
