Movies I am calling PD to review
« on: May 23, 2007, 12:47:06 AM »
Blue Velvet
Mulholand Drive
Ichi the Killer *
Taxi Driver
The Third Man
The 400 Blows
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai in the 8th Dimension
Alphaville *
American Graffiti
Bad Taste *
Meet the Feebles *

Beauty and the Beast (by Jean Cocteau) *
Blowup
Cemetery Man *
Crash (Cronenberg) * (I'm sure national chains probably don't stock it, though)
Days of Heaven
Eraserhead *
Izo *
Jacob's Ladder
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Pi
Requiem for a Dream
Repo Man
The Saddest Music in the World *

Sisters * (maybe)
Tetsuo: The Iron Man *
Videodrome * (again, maybe)
Wicker Man (the original)

The bolded titles are more in demand.  I skipped a lot of my collection and tried to limit it to movies that I think would prove to be interesting reactions from PD.

Taxi Driver is definitely a 9, maybe a 9.5. Very good movie, although the ending disappointed me.

Cemetery Man is one of the one best movies to come out in the last 20 years and arguably the most underrated.  I demand you bold it TVC.  Also please make PD READ Crash for really hilarious results.

PD is too dumb to get the book Crash.  He would quit after 2 pages.

You just KNOW PD will give the most shallow assessment of Jacob's Ladder possible. "It's about this guy in Vietnam who is attacked and sprayed with agent orange and then has hallucinations.  The hallucinations were a little scary until I figured out what was going on.  It is good.  I like Tim Robbins.  The end."

P.S. Billy Rygar, I don't need to be "taught" anything about '80s movies.  I love Alex Cox and I have seen most of his movies.  Repo Man isn't at the top of my list (I prefer Three Businessmen and Revengers Tragedy), but I even own it on DVD.  So stop assuming and making an ass out of you and me.  And Emilio Estevez isn't playing a latino in the movie.

Honestly, Meet the Feebles was probably a mistake.  At least Bad Taste feels really garage.  Ichi, though, I think has at least some depth to it, and I want to see what PD says.  Of course, since you brought this up and made me explain, he knows what to look for.

Yeah, PD, don't do Eraserhead first.  While it will be interesting to see what you think after you have experienced more nuanced Lynch, it would not be a good first pick.  DO BLUE VELVET FIRST.  You can rent BV in like any movie store.

Also, when you do watch Eraserhead, get the DVD.  Moreso than any other Lynch movies, it is very very visual, and watching it in low rez is not really a viable option.  It is a feast for the eyes movie.

PD, from watching a few minutes of this vid, it is SHIT quality.  It is way too dark.  You can't see what is going on a lot of the time.  I beg you not to watch this.  Get Blue Velvet first.  Watching Eraserhead first would be like going to a porno orgy without losing your virginity first.

Yeah I watched the first 5 minutes, and it was pretty dark. Is there any talking in the movie?

Blue Velvet is $12 at Circuit City. I don't like buying movies unless I really like them (like, 9.5 and up basically) . I might get it tomorrow since I don't have school, but we'll see. If this movie sucks I'm going to be bummed

Yeah, there's talking.

I can pretty much guarantee you won't be bummed by Blue Velvet, but did you check the video store first?  It's a highly acclaimed movie and it was nominated for many awards, so even though the material is risque, a lot of places carry it.

It's so renowned that even your college library will most likely have a copy.  Mine had the whole Lynch library.  Except Dune.   :-\

Honestly, if there's one movie to leave out, that's the one.

Man, I watched The Elephant Man a few weeks ago, again.  That is by far the most depressing movie ever made.

The Elephant Man might be my personal best movie ever created if it weren't so depressing to watch.  It's not navel gazing shit emo like The Fountain, either.  Making people feel introvertedly depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel.  The Elephant Man makes you legitimately sad about the situation of the titular character in the move.  Even now, just thinking of scenes, I almost feel like crying.

he was talking about 70's not 70's movies. As in Dazed & Confused is a movie about the 70's but not from the 70's.

PD still both it and Graffiti are required viewing. They both have great soundtracks that represent their decades well.

I just saw The Man Who Fell to Earth a few days ago.  While I enjoy the novelty of seeing David Bowie on screen and seeing his penis a bunch of times, the plot is flimsy and the direction is marred by some awful dated psychedelic imagery and editing.  Other than Bowie, who does a pretty good job for his first ever film role, the acting is uneven and a couple of the actors have scenes that should have made them unworthy to ever act again.  Notables examples of this include Candy Clark as the Mary-Lou character, who has to be one of the most annoying female leads in cinematic history. When she isn't talking about totally unrelated bullshit in her horrible southern accent, she's crying in her horrible southern accent, and I honestly can't say which is worse to witness.  And Rip Torn must have some wild sex in his personal life to think that a weird combination of yelling and loud growling is believable bedroom pleasure banter.  I was ready to call it quits just a few minutes in after sitting through his first little romp spliced with shitty Japanese "No" dance nonsense.

It's enjoyable enough to recommend a viewing for Bowie fans, but I can't see anyone else getting anything out of it.

The 400 Blows (it would probably be in the foreign section) and Cronenberg's Crash.  If one of these is not available, substitute Pi or Requiem for a Dream.  If 2 are not available, Pi or Requiem (don't get both, they are the same director and I want you to have variety) and Jacob's Ladder.
