By far my favorite game on the Taito Legends 2 compilation at the moment. I am ADDICTED to this game.
It takes the Space Invaders formula, gives it TRUE vertical shmup treatment, with multiple enemy patterns, mini bosses, bosses and it's so goddamn fun to play. Yeah, it's a cute em up, but I DON'T CARE. It's awesome!
By far my favorite aspect of the game has to be the enemy patterns. They're fun to blast through and the game offers a lot of variety in its levels. On one level you're on a beach. There are 3 screens on this beach. On one screen there are no bases in traditional Space Invaders fashion, but there are four HOLES. The aliens make it for these holes so they can hide in them while the rest of the invaders can invade your laser base. On another screen, there are 4 tree palm trees. The enemies run towards them so they can use them for cover and if I remember correctly, it's impossible to shoot these trees down. It rocks because they'll often hide behind the trees in groups, and then dash for your laser base so you lose. It's a game where a lot of level variety adds to the game and makes it highly replayable. It is much more strategic than the typical Space Invaders and it has added so much to the formula.
This game is the shit!
Another great feature about Space Invaders 95 is that you can choose from 8 different characters: a dog, a cat, 2 pieces of excrement (one pink, one blue), a cowgirl slut, Sayo-chan (aka Pocky) from Kiki Kaikai (Pocky and Rocky), her friend, and others. Each character comes with their own ship.
So what else does it got? Amazing animation even by today's standards. Yeah, it's cutesy, but it's so damn pretty and colorful that I don't mind.
