El Topo is pretty. . .
« on: May 25, 2007, 05:49:24 PM »
. . .wow WTF.

There's like absolutely nothing at all that is predictable about that movie.  I also watched a bit of The Holy Mountain, but I've had enough surrealism for one day.

These movies are ascrewed up.

BUY:

Also, this was like one of the wackiest things ever.  A no legged man strapped to the back of a no armed man:

I saw it as part of a film class about nine years ago.  It blew me the fuck away.  I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD for years and years and years.

Even though I haven't seen all of The Holy Mountain yet, I'd say spring for the box set.  It's only 30 bucks at DDD right now.  The Holy Mountain appears even better.  I just couldn't sit through another headfuck.  El Topo is great, but it has a lot of editing problems, particularly when it comes to cuts.  I can't even begin to describe these movies.  They are just flat out weird and filled with weird symbolism.  I'm not quite sure how I'd rank them against classics or anything, but they are definitely interesting and totally unique.  There's nothing like these movies.

I'm going to pick up the box set once DDD's 20% off sale starts, along with a bunch of other stuff.  This is an Anchor Bay release, isn't it?

Did you know Jodorowsky wanted to film Dune, before it became a Lynch project?

Am I mistaken or did Suda-51 mention this as a prime influence for Killer7?

He mentioned it somewhere.  I can sort of see where there could be influence, but I'd have to play through K7 again.

And yes it is anchor bay.  It also comes with the soundtracks to The Holy Mountain and El Topo, both of which are great.

The set is pretty nice, but there's no booklet :(  Kinda makes me wish Criterion did this.

For folks that want a taste, here's the trailer for El Topo and The Holy Mountain released to advertise the very long-awaited box set.  Be warned there be nudity.  Melonas and bananas.

The eye for imagery in these movies is off the hook, too.  From El Topo:

The legless dude in the back is braiding the hermaphrodite's hair with his feet, while the legless dude in front is painting his chest.

From The Holy Mountain:

Insane movies.

LIke I mentioned before, I'm not sure how I'd rank these movies alongside classics, but I'd say anyone that likes movies should check them out.  I definitely want to rewatch them again.  They have a strangeness that I have never seen before.  El Topo is slightly more fun (and much cheesier), but The Holy Mountain feels deeper (and has less production and editing issues).

I don't know.  Most movies that feature animal cruelty (like Cannibal Holocaust) are infamous for it, whereas El Topo and The Holy Mountain are not.  They had fairly large budgets for mexican movies, with the Holy Mountain (the one with the frogs) being paid for by John Lennon and Yoko themselves.  I doubt either of them, or the very pan-spiritual Jodorowsky, would be cool with animal cruelty.  I *think* the movies have commentary tracks.  I could do a little research later.

But offhand, I'd have to say no.  Both movies are infused with the imported eastern spiritualism of the 60s, and that doesn't mesh with animal cruelty.
