MAF's Weekly Gamin' Thread - Sponsored by Valvoline

OMG Castlevania: DoS OMG

Through the miracle of GameCrazy's Wishlist, I managed to get the rarified CASTLEVANIA: Dawn of Sorrow. That was an amazing day for me. I put my hands on the box and heard the angels sing and devils weep, as justice was served.

I was pretty blown away by the visuals in this game. I really cant see why SOTN cant port its way onto the DS at this point. The complaints leveled against the magic seal stuff seem overblown, I was afraid the seal things would be really small so the motions on the touch screen would get bungled up, but the seal is the size of the screen, so honestly how hard can the later ones be? Half the time the game does them for you anyway.

I got my hands on a cool katana and I can throw cats at people. The first PUNCH boss was sorta tough but his pattern was thankfully pretty predictable. He had a mean left hook though get it lolz lef.. anyway..

A nod to the excellent music and the much improved characters and dialogue. I know the original game in this castlevania storyline had some good bits, but DoS seems to pace the character interactions and story at a pace that doesnt let you forget that half these people are actually friends, not chance encounters.

Final Fantasy Advance: Turn based on the go, but so stripped down....

I was also in Seattle this weekend looking around Pikes Place Market which was OMG swarmed with street folk, carnies, and out of towners. I didnt like the crowd at all, or the giant insane man that shoved me out of the way as I crossed the street. I did make it to the mall nearby and found Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for 15 dollars JAWSOME. This title has become impossible to find used lately, I think jerks are snatching up the last of the copies in used circulation or something. I am of course not counting online sources.

The entire snowball fight 'lets look at a fantasy book' sequence aside, this game is an excellent time sink between bouts of Disgaea 2 which I long to return to..I just need to get home from work. Playing Tactics Advance has reminded me how much the genre has evolved thanks to the efforts of NIS. The judge system in Tactics Advance is neat, but there's a lot of bloat in the interface that seems like such a hassle. Like R U SURE U WANNA DO THIS after you tell the game to carry out an action.

Also, I havent leveled a complaint about the D-PAD for DS Lite yet, but for this game in particular, moving the cursor over the grid is a bit of a pain in Tactics Advance with the DS Lite d-pad. It's a little too sensitive for the game, so I am constantly moving past squares and doubling back.

I do appreciate that the game, with all of its story, does offer a very open ended experience that translates into a bajillion hours of strat fun, but after playing most of the NIS games, when I play Tactics it is so hard not to see what it is missing.

Disgaea 2 does not have bad voice acting!

Quick recap, playing through a crapload of RPGs, a new mission, fight for future etc etc...

I am about three hours from completing Wild Arms 4, I just need to make it to town to buy Raquel her best weapon and then im ready to roll. As long as Raquel can keep crit-ing over 13000 I am pretty sure the last boss will be a cake-walk. Grandia III is not going as well, the Silver Stream in Verse World is a bitch. The enemies keep layer bomb traps and the stupid Verse Shrooms have a ton of hit points and cast a quake that destroys. I am going to head back tomorrow night with a crapload of earth rings equipped and teach them the meaning of pain. However I think this is really just an indication that I need to grind some levels.

Now on to my main issue, people bitching about Disgaea 2's VA. WHAT exactly is wrong with it? I even recognize a few of the actors from professional dubs for popular dubbed anime (rozlin is martina from Slayers Next for example). The point is I remember Makai Kingdom's voice acting very well and if anything MK's voice work hams it up way more, so if either game should get VA bitching it would be MK, but even then it wasnt BAD.

So it boils down to a very simple fact. Etna's VA was changed. This bothers people, why I cannot begin to fathom. Her VA has changed, but the style in the way she talks fits her character, and the delivery isnt bad. What we have here is a case of nerds not being able to let go. Who the hell cares if Etna's VA changed if its still good. IM SORRY YOUR IMAGINARY DEMON GIRLFRIEND ISNT WHAT YOU REMEMBER, but some things gotta change you stupid bastards. Just worship the shrine in your closets until Disgaea PSP hits the states.

Last but not least lol... "This is the way my thread ends..."

I watched the Halo 3 trailer again and was compelled to fire up Halo 2 again and shoot some covenant. The game looks great on 360 but I find it incredible I rarely hear people talk about the MASSIVE amounts of texture pop-in and frame-rate drops in cinematics. It's really amazing the game was able to ship with something so obvious. It honestly affects my enjoyment of the cutscenes, because as each begins I actually WAIT for the rest of it to render in front of me, and when it completes I get a framerate drop. Awesome.

That aside, when the cutscenes stop the game is fun. People who hate the Covenant levels can shove off, and cliff-hangers are cliff-hangers, we're ALL bungie's bitch lol...

:o halo 3 :o

Disgaea 2 finally hooked me -- I thought I'd burned out on the ol' NIS cool young dude-out-yer-characters formula but OH NO I got it bad again. The story, while better than Phantom Brave's saccharine dross, is utterly forgettable -- unlike Disgaea 1, which was consistently anime LOLZ, Disgaea 2's plot has way too much Rozalin babbling about families and not enough from the funnier supporting cast. Hence, PRESS TRIANGLE TO SKIP STORY. I was initially disappointed in the reduced number of classes and monster types over Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom, but in the end there's still plenty of classes to muck with and reincarnate as.

Right now, I have Adell at 34, with all of the non-plot characters reincarnated once. Adell has an attack of over 1000 which makes him the heavy hitter -- I completed the 30 levels of his Exertion Belt which now boosts his attack by 280 -- and he can mop up story missions almost by himself.  I had three prinnies in my main team initially, largely for the novelty factor, but I turned one into an Aqua Demon (Warslug) and reincarnated the other two as CAPTAIN PRINNIES. I have a Kunoichi, a Thief, a Star Skull, a Red Mage, a Sinner, and an OLD DUDE for the rest of my team. I refuse to use Taro, Hanako, or Yukimaru because they are PEDOBAIT LOLIS. I don't use Rozalin a whole lot, either, although she's decent -- trouble is, she's stuck at level 18. Tink is good, though; he's level 32 and packed with HP so I can run him through item levels with bad bonuses quickly. Kinda wanna make a gunner or a samurai, but the thought of grinding extra characters right now seems SNOOZE. As soon as the main team crests 30 -- they're averaging about 27 right now -- I'll consider new recruits.

YAY STAT NERDHOOD

I dunno I think the story in Disgaea 2 is more ha ha funny and less hammy funny. Course it could be the whiskey talking. Tink actually has grown on me as a character. A pot-bellied flying frog with a french accent = rox.

Lots of Disgaea 1 was just Flonne with her played up innocent routine and Etna being all mischievous and laharl going im the best.

WHARE IS POT BELLIED FLYING FROG?!

I do think the Rozlin aspect of the story is pretty predictable tho, and mid-boss beats the dark hero any day of the week.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is the bee's knees.  I started playing it again.  I think it's even better than Aria of Sorrow!

The only thing I don't like are the lame math sliding puzzle crap.  It's Castlevania - not MATHlevania.  I want to kill vampires, not play with a rubix cube.

I think the best part of Castlevania is killing Frankenstein.  I don't know, but I like that.  And Soma's weapons are badass.  I hope this isn't the last we see of the characters from this storyline, but I guess two back-to-back Soma Cruz adventures are enough for now.

Willco:

The next Castlevania for DS looks great too.

Zombz:

I didn't like black, the controls, at least on ps2 seemed sluggish, and the whole hide-behind-crate gameplay gets old if it isn't broken up by SOMETHING. Fear sorta had the same problem but somehow didnt feel as bad. I'd say it was the creepy story an events maybe.

Halo is an exception because while it did the HBC gameplay it was broken up with a lot of run and gun segments.

BOTH of you remember MMZX is out on wednesday laaaaaawlz

I always buy the Castlevania games.  Circle of the Moon sold me on GBA, and although HoD was meh, AoS was AWESOME.  Portrait of ruins looks pretty swank.

I have been told to hold off on Mega Man ZX!

Part of the reason I'm getting Mega Man ZX as soon as possible is because it's going to disappear in anywhere from 4-5 days. GET TETRIS WILLCO

And Dawn of Sorrow kicks ass. Julius mode is jizz-worthy.

I need to beat Trauma Center tonight. Damn game is so frustrating, but it's still pretty good.

Also picked up Ninja Gaiden Black today because my friend lent me his Xbox. I didn't rent it because I already did that twice with the original nd I never end up beating it and then I don't know whether I want to start over or not or...whatever fuck it, it was only 20 bucks for a ridiculously awesome game.

I'm playing with...

Yakuza

REALLY cool game so far. One of the most well-realized game stories ever. Awesome raw atmosphere, good "John Woo" ambiance and world. Good beat'em up controls, even if they're a little lousy. Very captivating. Nice RPG elements.

Can't believe all the idiotic reviews out there, some titles are just very well worth playing. There's a lot of loading and the image quality is pretty poor, and the game does seem a bit linear to me, however one of the definitive games of the year. Can't wait for the sequel.

Enchanted Arms

Still on the way to finish this. It was kinda overrated by some people @ GAF me thinks. Still a respectable Jappa RPG for the fans. I don't understand why everyone finds the voice acting irritating, I think that the corny english anime dub included is just very funny.

King of Fighters '96

Just practicing myself before King of Fighter '98 gets re-released on PS2. I use Mai.

Super Mario Sunshine

Began trying this again... seems cool and reasonably good. I think it was overbashed since the bar was set eerily too high by Super Mario 64's surprise excellence. It just couldn't live up to it. Good controls, charming worlds, unbelievably good and clean graphics. Another quality Nintendo product.

Too much backtracking and pretty boring waterpack control mechanics though. Awful story and unbearable voice acting too.

demi's schlong

Well this one was unwillingly enforced upon me. Pretty disappointing, neither very large or firm, can't wait until it goes back to where it came from. Super Mario Sunshine's graphics in progressive scan with the component cables arouse me a lot more. It's been overrated by people like White Man @ GAF.

Willco:

Honestly, after the trials I went through to get Castlevania DoS, I dont expect a DS game to ever be in stock outside of release day. Every DS game I want now gets a pre-order slapped on it a month or two in advance. I mean I only just now got a copy of Phoenix Wright, and that was through a friend.

Mondain:

Whiteman likes Yakuza, sounds like its at least better than SHENMUE

Actually a TON of games are worthy of a play, the trouble is we have a limited time to take part in the exercise. The result is a bunch of cynics who couldnt have fun with a game if it gave them a blowjob. Seriously, it seems like the harsh reviews I see for decent B-Level games are more products of their frustration over not being able to play more 'Good Games' rather than the games being crap.

When is KoF 11 coming out here? WHENNN its 11 right? or is it 10. OMG awesome. Kasumi returns.

Yeah that's right. It's the exact reason as to why I basically stopped reading GAF's gaming board. There's always someone to bash any good title, and someone to praise the worst duds in existence. I love games a lot more since then. I just use IGN, Gamespot and a little OA chit chat, for the rest my enjoyment of games is stricly based upon my own subjective pleasures, and there ain't a goddamn twit who's going to make me feel otherwise, in spite of the occasionally obnoxious smugness that ensues. :P

KOF 11 well, SCEA is pretty hostile to the release of standalone 2D games here, so who knows... I still believe that we're going to see it somehow, word is that they may relax their tight rules a little to keep the PS2 alive longer... or else, SNK Playmore is probably going to create a bundle with other fighting games or something seeing as it's major, but it could take ages...

Really my favorite game of the year so far.  8)

The original Xbox is virtually dead, MS stopped shipping and manufacturing it months ago, and retailers are liquidating all of its games for a few dollars to free shelve space. There won't really be any more projects on it, so it will certainly not happen.

Wii, well that's a possibility considering that SNK Playmore will release Metal Slug Anthology for the system's launch, they took interest in the system... the classic controller looks cool enough...  8)

I rented Yakuza, the gameplay is pure TRIPE, but the story is really, really interesting. I'm really into yakuza movies (I even have a dvd shelf dedicated to yakuza movies) and the story from what i play is good, if a bit overdramatic at times. The fighting engine is pure garbage, it feels so primitive.. but I guess it works...Even Dead Rising's fighting engine feels better than Yakuza's :(

And too bad that the camera isnt freelook, the angles while you walk are so weirds, you cant really stop and check out the scenery; unless i missed something.

Well i took a break from the HBC gameplay of Black, fuck it got hard quick thank god i approached it as a ghost recon game rather than a doom game. I would have been dead all the time. But i'm pretty happy with it so far.

So after doing some planing for the wedding today and seeing Tony Jai in the protector i came home and started up Test Drive Unlimited. At first i thought it would get old quick but this freaking game is huger than huge. And the curves and different types of driving needed are intense and exciting. The online chill out cruising freaking rocks.

If you have interest in racing just even a little get the game.

Yakuza is waiting to be opened and i also went ahead and got Splinter Cell on PSP to prepair me for DA

Rallisport Challenge is awesome but Dice is making the next Rally game multiconsole so that sucks.

TDU is just fun, and in no way should it be considered midtown madness 3.5 Its taking the idea of open ended cities and bringing them to life with players and in a way no other game has before it. When your connected online and your in the city you'll see real people and be able to talk to them while your driving.

I took the island trip with 6 guys just fucking around going to all the car dealerships and it was a freaking blast. Its like a cool social game where you can meet new people and just chill. Plust the soundtrack is pretty freaking awesome. Finally for once i didnt have to start up my own classical music in a game.

I need to finish enchanted arms but i dont think thats gonna happen right now.

Damn Yakuza has a damn good story line. I feel ashamed to say that it rocks.

N3 is for the X360 and while I like it, it is not GOTY for the X360.

Yakuza just kicks ass, the story is great and it is fun to beat people up.  I finished today, so it has joined that elite club of games good enough to get me to play it all the way through.

A vid a made of about 1/2 into the game.

Yakuza Pt 1

Yakuza Pt 2

I've been playing Field Commander and Mega Man Reworked/Reloaded/Revamped/Rewhatthehellever.  Sure, it's a total rip on Advance Wars, but it's minus the forced hip lingo and cheery japtard artwork of AW, so +++ for Field Commander.  Mega Man is the Muppet Babies of Mega Man games, but I still like it.

I played maybe 10 missions into field commander. It never looked as pretty as it did in the pictures, and while it isnt japanese wacky stuff, it doesnt really have personality beyond the kind of personality I hate in Sony produced military games.

Its all dirty people dressed like hicks driving red/black blocks around that make polygons explode when they shoot at stuff. Probably just me being jaded. I also thought the damage done by units felt really arbitrary. Sometimes it'd be like heavy against inf, sometimes not, and terrain never affected things that much.
