Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
« on: May 31, 2007, 09:23:17 AM »
Picked it up today with Guilty Gear XX Accent Core for PS2 (which will also be hitting the Wii in a few months).

I am very impressed with the controls. The game play is great; I was able to jump right in and get head shots like never before. It's still the same exact game as before, controls aside, but it really does play incredibly well.

It's also nice to have the GC visuals with the PS2 extras, plus true 16:9. No black bars on the top and bottom of my TV.

Someone needs to take the control set up, modify it a bit, and make a good Wii FPS. Also the controls would make for a nice PN03 sequel...

Oh, and it's got a new trailer for the Biohazard "gun" game coming out for the Wii later this year.

PN03 omg why did i never think about that with the wii controler. Waggled the wand to the right or spin it to make her do her moves OMG OMG that would be amazing.

yeah i'm one of the only fants of PN03 i imported it and bought the us version thrice over.

Please give more impressions of Re4 wii, good to hear all the good stuff so far.

G, I don't know what else to say.  :)  It's all the same, now with (surprisingly) better controls.

I fucking love PN03 too.  I pimped the shit out of it on GAF a few years back when it first came out.

So the graphics weren't downgraded?

Doesn't appear to be that way to me, BUT I haven't played the GC version in almost two years.

I loved PN03. It's a short fun kinda arcadey-type game with great replay value thanks to all the different suits and their different abilities.

It is a love it or hate it game, but you won't be losing much if you don't like it. I bought it 2-3 years ago for $15. I'm guessing that it's even cheaper now.

Far as i've seen in reviews RE4 doesnt look worse, 3D just doesnt age well. As the next few years roll on Wii games will look less and less impressive even if the Wii is doing all it can hardware wise.

No, RE4 GC still looks amazing. When the first pics were released it DID look like a downgrade.

I never got why folks thought RE4 looked impressive. It looked like a middling Xbox game with 16-bit color dithering issues.

I've been wondering this ever since I saw it, too. It's always hit me as a ho-hum DirectX8-class game running very low resolution with color depth issues.

I dunno. It's the atmosphere, the sound, the graphics, the whole package. Yeah it could use a bit more color depth but it somehow adds to the games grimy feel.

I got into it and then the game impeded my progress with fucking escort missions and drawn out levels.

I'm playing through it now and I'm nearing the part where I just got tired of the game. I want to love it a lot. Hopefully I can get past this hurdle.

Specifically, which chapter is the point where you get tired of it?

A lot of the later chapters are quite VOID of Ashley, you know–once you get past the majority of the castle, you're basically done with a lot of the escort missions.

Pretty much the entire castle section. I got to the part when Ashley got taken away and I just didn't want to continue anymore... :(

Last night I kicked Salazar's ass in the house (omg I love that boss fight) and then I headed for the castle entrance. Because I'm a pussy and the castle entrance FREAKS ME OUT I stopped for the night.

Well, that's true.

The minute owners of your consoles are saying

I'm talking about games in general. I can honestly say that I was fine with ps2 and dreamcast graphics. Yeah, I'd like to see better, but if games didn't have better I wouldn't really mind. I certainly don't need nor want photorealistic graphics.

it isn't about photorealism. it's about large environments, physics, behavioral models, AI, special effects, and alternate rendering techniques that provide a more flexible canvas for developers and designers to realize their visions. sure, a competent artist can paint a good picture using only four colors, but it is still an essential limitation -- sixteen colors not only let you paint the same picture, but opens up a geometrically greater order of opportunities to express a vision.

what MAF said is absolutely correct: when you're having to EXCUSE your platform, you need to rethink your whole perspective. Customers shouldn't have to engage in cognitive dissonance in order to appreciate your product.

God, it's addictive :)

 ???

Is Pn03 a good game? I've wanted to give it a try. Seems like a total love it or hate it Capcom game like Killer 7.

You pretty much answered your own question.  :)  It's a love/hate kind of game.  I fucking loved it; it's yet another of Capcom's amazing 3rd person action games from last gen.  They have that genre almost perfected.

RE4 doesnt look impressive anymore against the HD stuff of modern gaming. 3D ages terribly.

Agreed.  It does look dated now, but it's still as fun as ever to play, and that's what counts.

I never got why folks thought RE4 looked impressive. It looked like a middling Xbox game with 16-bit color dithering issues.

...And disagree.  It has a lot of impressive moments, huge bosses, and some great art/atmosphere.  But more than two years later, it's no longer as impressive.

can someone teach me how to play PN03. I got it and tried it and died it and I don't understand

Uh...move and shoot, dude.  And dodge attacks.  What was it that you didn't understand?

Far as i've seen in reviews RE4 doesnt look worse, 3D just doesnt age well. As the next few years roll on Wii games will look less and less impressive even if the Wii is doing all it can hardware wise.

It will be interesting to see what happens, although Wii games should start looking better as developers figure out new tricks with the hardware.  Getting outdated to hell didn't stop the GB from dominating.

Also maybe when we start seeing actual WII GAMES AND NOT GAME CUBE PORTS, there will be an improvement.

I saw a comparison vid of RE4 GC vs. RE4 PC on Gametrailers over breakfast this morning and the lack of lighting jumped out at me for both versions. Really looked and felt flat, even when compared to its comtemporaries.

Quote
Also maybe when we start seeing actual WII GAMES AND NOT GAME CUBE PORTS, there will be an improvement.

There will be an improvement, but it'll still be really weak in comparison to what the 360/PS3 show off, and you'll still see "looks great for a Wii game" excuses and selective screengrabbing cognitive dissonance from the most faithful. I think any improvement will be mostly overshadowed by the kind of visuals the other systems are pushing out.

It's not a huge deal for people who just want to play games and don't care how they look, but from purely a visuals standpoint, the Wii isn't going to get any comparatively better. I think it'll just get worse and worse looking over time because of the impossible to avoid comparisons with other products. If I was making a Wii game, I'd be focusing on mostly fixed cameras and clean art direction and consistent design to save me from the system's shortcomings. You can make a really pretty game with not a lot of horsepower with that approach.

The Wii is SEVERELY limited in terms of what it can push, which puts even more pressure to deliver on the WiiMote which thus far has proven to be less of an innovation and more of a 'neat' approach to doing something I can do with less effort and more precisely on a decent pad.

I never got into RE4 because the controls don't fit the fucking game design. RE4 can't seem to decide if its an action game, an on rails game like K7 or survival horror. How people could call it the best action game when it feels so clunky is beyond me.

Freespace 2 had the best escort mission ever at the end of the game. Crazy shit, like half of the remaining fleet racing haphazardly for a jump node and you didn't have any real objective other than to help out the best you could (you couldn't "fail" the mission) against a massive onslaught of fighters. Then
the "twist" at the end of the mission/game, which is like the best ending for a science fiction game ever.

Frag: Did you ever play X-Wing Alliance? That game was like 90% escort missions, and there was one in particular I could never beat cause they seemed to put me JUST out of reach of the ships I had to defend even at maximum speed I could never make it in time and I just gave up entirely.

I played that YEARS ago, but don't remember the mission. Poor Larry Holland, now backbenched to working on SEGA games for the Wii. An updated Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe-complete with 360-friendly strategic maps and an arcadey flight model with joystick and gamepad support-would be a strong game.

I could revisit the old Star Wars sims but really I'd just rather play through Freespace 2 again, since it's probably the best game I've ever played.

What makes it worse is that they won't even actually play the 3rd party games-they really don't have any intent to play anything but their mascot drivel and Nintendo-produced minigames on their consoles.  It's all about cap meets feather.

The game would suck even it it wasn't on the Wii. That's what was alluded to in the whole "third-string thowaway" remark Drinky made earlier.
Does it suck more because it's on the Wii (versus the other systems?)? Probably, due to the low SD resolution and dither-me-timbers design of that shitty framebuffer.

It would still suck even in SUPER OVER 9000p HD resolutions and SHIT YOUR PANTS graphics, the only difference is that if it had that then I'd be banging my head over all of the DEWY > CRYSIS threads.
