That's Read or Dream, not Read or Die. Same author, same universe (I think), totally different story and characters. According to the manga version I saw at Borders, it's considered to be the sequel of Read or Die.

Huh, you're right. I didn't google the TV series before posting. The girls are originally from the TV series, they just got their own manga in 2005. How silly of me to assume Viz would indicate the manga was an alternate continuity...
