Malek, PD, teach me about clasical music?
« on: June 02, 2007, 06:08:06 PM »
After reading Birth of Tragedy I've been inspired to try and get into classical music.  Now I must say in any form of music, I'm quit distinguished mentally-challenged, so I'll probably be asking questions.  Anyways give me some names to look up and I'll see if I like it.

Know these names:

Rachmaninoff, Orff, Bizet, Mozart, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Telemann, Bach, Dvorák, Rimsky-Korsakov, Offenbach, Liszt, Chopin, Wagner, ... eh, just tune into your city's classical station or listen to one on Internet Radio before the RIAA kills it.

Good current classical performers are Gil Shaham, the Orpheus Ensemble, Eroica Trio, among many others... and likely your own city's orchestra.  Check out your local performers, there's probably always interesting stuff going on.  Local colleges will also often have free or cheap concerts.

There's also modern stuff going around.  John Williams has a bit of stuff besides Star Wars, and there are groups like Bond that pep-up existing classical stuff with their own style or others who mix-n-match with their original music.  (Of course, some people like looking at Bond more than listening to them, which I can understand, since I think their sound is silly.)

Also, free Creative Commons-licensed classical music downloads: http://www.musikethos.org/wiki/me.php/Main/HomePage/

It means free to download without penalty, like free/open source software.

After reading Birth of Tragedy

Wagner.  His music was to lead the Dionysian rebirth in Europe after all.

ahh, but didn't he come to see that Wagners music was Apollonian after the split?

...at least thats what Walter Kaufmann's footnote said, lol.

Yes, but we're going to pretend that hasn't happened yet.  Indulge yourself.  Revel in excess.  Put on the Faust Overture, have some red wine, and let the afternoon breeze caress your naked body.

But I was already doing that, besides the Faust Overture part, which is why I made this thread - to complete the experience.

Haha, well then... You're in Canada, right?  Perhaps you need to step things up and get some absinthe or something.  That's very Europe circa 1860s-ish.  Actually, don't.  It's not really worth it.  Hmm, maybe some frolicking in the garden followed by some more wine and a fine cheese?

Mother 3 uses some classical stuff, and its basically my only point to recommend from. (I dont listen to it otherwise) The mother 3 ghost etude is original content however, its also fucking brilliant. So any of these are good:

Quote
090 - Family Matters Second Movement: A classical medley! Very creative. In case anyone's wondering, the songs covered are--in order--Beethoven's 5th, the Mother 3 Ghost Etude, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, and Mozart's Symphony No. 40

100 - Ancestor Worship, Eight Movement: In this medley, the songs are Beethoven's 5th, Bach's Toccata & Fugue, Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, and Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Spring).

Heres the second song if you want to hear it:

My favorite classical piano pieces are probably Wilhelm Kempff playing Beethoven's sonatas.  All three movements of "Moonlight" -

I must say Error Macro, it makes the wind tickle my balls just a little softer and the cheese taste a little finner.  :tophat

Ok explain to me how these things are named. Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major, BWV1046 III , Allegro.  what does the bolded part mean?

edit:  I'm about to burn it to a cd and I see that the level volume on the songs are quit diffrent.  Should I level the volume or are some songs meant to be louder/quieter than others?

It is a good anime though. And it actually uses classical music. I never really tried to get into classical music, but I recognized the names of a few of the songs that were played in it and their composers.

It's the numbering system of the thematic catalog of Bach's work (I think there was a chronological version done some time later).  Allegro is the tempo of the piece.  It's supposed to be played uptempo and "joyous."  Although, I think that it doesn't necessarily mean that in some of Bach's pieces, and that it was simply used as an identifier instead.

As far as the CD goes, you should be okay with peak normalization if you have tracks from various sources.  You just don't want to compress the dynamic range, because, well, then the music would lose all of it's feeling.  Can't have a quiet section be as loud as the loudest passages.

I wish I could recommend more in the vein of the Brandenburg Concerto, but I'm out of my element here.  My knowledge of classical music is not very much at all, comparatively.  I could go through my CDs and stuff and see if I find anything, though.
