The RUSSIA situation: What do you think?

Missile crap aside (it will work itself out), I found this blurb at the end far more interesting:

Quote
But his comments to reporters from G-8 nations seemed certain to feed speculation that he would seek to stay in power beyond the spring of 2008.

“Four years is a fairly short time,” Putin said according to the transcript. “It seems to me that in today’s Russia five, six or seven years would be acceptable, but the number of terms still should be limited.”

Bush kicks off the G8 on a low note. GOOD JOB BUDDY!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19040836/

Quote
ROSTOCK, Germany - President Bush arrived here Tuesday for the Group of Eight industrial nations summit, having just a few hours earlier stoked a testy dispute with Russia over a new U.S. missile defense system by saying that Moscow has “derailed” once-promising democratic reforms.

In a speech in Prague celebrating democracy’s progress around the globe — and calling out places where its reach is either incomplete or lacking — Bush said that free societies emerge “at different speeds in different places” and have to reflect local customs. But he said certain values are universal to all democracies, and rapped several countries for not embracing them.

“In Russia, reforms that once promised to empower citizens have been derailed, with troubling implications for democratic development,” Bush said, speaking at a democracy conference organized by former dissidents.

Quote
With the Iraq war raging and that country in disarray, critics say there is widespread skepticism worldwide about Bush’s “freedom agenda” — the byproduct of his promise to advance democracy in every corner of the globe.

But Bush claimed the mantle of democratic warrior.

“I pledged America to the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world,” he said. “Some have said that qualifies me as a dissident president. If standing for liberty in the world makes me a dissident, then I’ll wear the title with pride.”

Earlier, Bush and the Czech Republic’s leaders defended the plans for the missile shield here against fierce opposition the local population as well as Russia.

Neither Iran or North Korea have any real ballistic missle capability. This whole thing is just Bush's way of pissing off Russia and Putin for "backsliding" on democracy and souring and isolating relations between Europe and Russia.

Stupid stuff. If Iran or North Korea had sufficient missle tech to deliver a warhead in medium/theater range it would make a little bit more sense, but they don't. That's not to mention that both countries only spend as much on their nuclear programs as to keep the IAEA and the US on edge-the threat of nuclear power is one of the few bargaining chips you can have when dealing with the US.

Iran pretty much just laughed at the US and the US replied with pure suspicion that Iran was building a 1,900 mile range missile but I honestly dont think even Iran would be dumb enough to missile a country directly.

Yeah, the thing is that mutual assured destruction doesn't even apply to such smaller states-yes, you might be able to wipe out a western coastal city or two provided that your missles even get close to their intended targets, but the reprisal strike will surely exterminate all of your command and control and industrial capacity-and that's if someone sane was at the helm. I wouldn't put it past a emotional/irrational commander in chief to start exterminating civilian population centers as well at that point.

Not a good deal for the rogue nation. Same for leaking nukes to terrorists-that shit will get traced back to you at some point, and once it does your regime is 110% fucked.

These leaders put their own survival and desire for power over everything else-to do something like bust open a nuclear weapon on a city somewhere just doesn't make sense.

I think he believes it in the same way that fundies believe in creationism and other madness-they surround themselves with likeminded people and they form an insidious network to support one another's cognitive dissonance.

That's because right now, China is holding all it's cards to it's chest. It hasn't done anything so far to antagonise the US, right now they're in a state of mutual needs. If China trys to invade Taiwan then we'll see the 'peace' breached.

I don't know why the US doesn't just follow an example set by a similarly sparsely populated country, like Sweden or something. Increase taxes, and give people what they need without them having to think about it.

The problem is people dont know what they need. And everyone needs different things.

and that's bad, how?

that you're able to look beyond misplaced patriotism and recognize the merit (assuming you're correct) in russia's position, merely says that you're a reasonable member of the human race.

Its bad because it makes me feel a tiny bit of shame for where I live, and I shouldnt have to feel that way.

Just because you CAN feel shame doesnt mean you should have to. I would like to have a govt body I felt pride in because they earn respect :(
