Evilbore Director Survivor: David Lynch
« on: June 05, 2007, 04:36:22 PM »
Seeing as we have better taste in movies over here, I figured this would be the place to do this list.  TVC agreed with the notion so we're using the list he posted in the Spielberg thread over at neocrap.

Rules, Regulations and Red Tape
-We will begin voting immediately.  A round will last until an entry has 10... er, 5 votes, then it is eliminated and we will reset vote counts and start a new round.
-FoC votes will not be counted.
That's pretty much it.  Let the games begin!

The Elephant Man (1980)
Blue Velvet (1986)
Twin Peaks (I'm rolling the whole franchise into one entry)
Wild at Heart (1990)
Mulholland Drive (2001)

eliminated:

Dune (1984)
Lost Highway (1997)
INLAND EMPIRE (2006)
The Straight Story (1999)
Eraserhead (1977)

For my first vote, I vote to kick Lost Highway off the island.

Saw Dune for the first time the other night due to a recommendation from Cheebs.  I'd like to give him a big hearty 'fuck you' and to also tell Dune to get the fuck off the island.

I still need to see INLAND EMPIRE.

Haven't seen INLAND EMPIRE or The Straight Story either.  Is the former on DVD yet or does anyone know where the hell I could watch it?

Anyway, Lost Highway gets my vote.

I haven't seen INLAND EMPIRE yet either.  It is due for US DVD release in August.  They are trying to make sure it's out on HD-DVD relatively soonafter, but no date has been announced.

Lost Highway is my pick for after Dune gets voted off.  There's no way you can say Dune is better than Lost Highway.

why the hate for lost highway? aside from the mediocre performance by the actor who played pete (the mechanic), what about it makes it so bad? it's clearly designed to be totally open to interpretation. also: patricia arquette :hyper :hyper

i'd vote off twin peaks and wild at heart before lost highway!

hey, i liked both tp (tv show and movie amalgam -- i liked the pilot and first eps of the tv show better than the movie) and wild at heart, a lot. but i like lost highway more than either. i'm a sucker for open-ended quasi-occult noirish stuff.

Lost Highway sucks.  That was Lynch intentionally trying to be as weird as weird can be.  It was clearly a commercial stab, too, hence the shitty soundtrack featuring hip edgy bands.

Dude I just watched the trailer. Holy shit this looks cool; the music is awesome, although it feels like the Outer Limits score. Which rocks!

i don't think dune is a BAD movie, and i think the hate that gets leveled at it by canon-centered fanboys is distinguished mentally-challenged (even though frank herbert penned the script himself). i don't even think sting was a bad cast as feyd-rautha, given that feyd had few lines. i think the biggest problems are the reliance on countless cryptic effects shots and a really REALLY over-the-top performance by the guy who played the baron -- come on, the baron's evil in the book was subtle and pervasive, not flamboyant and gothic insane. plus screaming fruit loop crazy does NOT work well in an essentially victorian setting where everyone else delivers such calculated performances with measured cadences in their dialogue.

Calling it- Lost Highway is toast.

Remaining-

Eraserhead (1977)
The Elephant Man (1980)
Blue Velvet (1986)
Twin Peaks (I'm rolling the whole franchise into one entry)
Wild at Heart (1990)
The Straight Story (1999)
Mulholland Drive (2001)
INLAND EMPIRE (2006)

Now it gets hard, IMO.  I'm voting out INLAND EMPIRE.

I watched Eraserhead last night. It was interesting but ultimately boring. Nothing ever happened and I didn't watch the last 30 minutes. Somehow my life will have to go on.

I know my vote doesnt count, but Elephant man is one of my all time favorite movies.

I guess we can call it for Straight Story.

I expect things to get more varied now...

Eraserhead (1977)
The Elephant Man (1980)
Blue Velvet (1986)
Twin Peaks (I'm rolling the whole franchise into one entry)
Wild at Heart (1990)
Mulholland Drive (2001)

Wow, tough choice.  I'm actually voting to kick off the Elephant Man- I'll probably get some grief for that but it's never been one of my favorites.
