It's not a degree you stupid git:

A baccalaureate address refers usually to the pre-commencement speech given to a graduating college or university senior class. The speaker selected to give such speech is either a well-known or otherwise prominent person of notability or, in certain U.S. institutions, a faculty member selected by the graduating class themselves. A baccalaureate address can also refer to a pre-high school graduation event that is often religious and the farewell to the senior class is done in the style of sermons in the United States. Baccalaureate addresses range in length from under one hour to over two hours.

Local churches usually do such things before high school graduations.

Consider the free food to be candy. The church; a van. That shady looking fellow over there in it is Christianity.
oh I knew that, I'm just wondering why this is supported by a school.

Traditionally, there was a certain religious element to the event.  It's not like I'm going to piss holy water on you religious or anything.  Sometimes the baccalaureate is accompanied by a mass, too, but I'm not sure everywhere does that.

I remember when I graduated from my public high school, there was a baccalaureate at a local church because of the whole no god in public schools thang, whereas for my private school peers, it was an in school dealio.

I really don't know much about it.  It's a tradition thing.
