the ending sucked because it just killed off a bunch of characters.  don't get the point of that.  the worst part to me in a crime movie is when somebody's killed because they were in a bad place at a bad time.

It was great because it came out of nowhere and makes me anticipate The Departed 2. Is it going to be a totally new story or a continuation? What happens with the baby? Was it Costigan's?

Eh, Last King of Scotland was only great BECAUSE of Whitaker.  Yes, nicca CAN act.  But I feel like it was the same situation the Queen was in–great BECAUSE of the leading performance.

I saw it in the theater. We discussed it in a few threads on GAF. It was probably in one of the art film threads I've never seen you post in.

The sadistic side of me would love to see Michelle review a recent film of Pedro Almodovar or Wong Kar Wai. It would be hilarious.

I saw it opening day and then predicted it as the winner of the best foreign language oscar while everyone else was still spooging all over Pan's Labyrinth. PL was a great film, but The Lives of Others was sheer brilliance.

I don't think there is a part 2.  It's based on Infernal Affairs and it took a three part movie and made it 2 hours.  Read the plot summary on wikipedia and the departed's plot will sound like shit.

little miss sunshine was one of last year's best films, easily besting the departed.

the departed is scorcese's WORST film.

the aviator used to hold that spot, imo.

if i hadn't known he was the director, i would have been SHOCKED, after watching it, if someone told me he helmed the film.

You're the ONLY one saying that you think the Departed is flat-out awful, when in all honestly it's still a solid and entertaining movie that was worth its praise to some extent.  Definitely not best picture worthy, but mentioning it in any Oscar sentence is not unheard of.

i liked it a lot. i made a thread about it on gaf:

so i bought the ce and finally got around to seeing it last night.

from the beginning of the movie, you know you're watching a scorsese movie. the way characters get killed, the music, the strong language, it's scorsese alright. that opening sequence gave me a goodfellas vibe, which is a good thing.

after the sullivan/castello opening scene you follow costigno and sullivan in police academy (whatever it's called) and this part, which went on for about ±15mins, felt very disjointed. it's just felt like it was scene after scene and to be honest i kinda lost track.

after this part the movie is just amazing. dicaprio was awesome as costigno and i liked nicholson's acting, too. the ending was freaking awesome. basically, every main character (besides dignam) dies . the way they die is so ****ing raw and unexpected. costigan is ready to walk out of the elevator and boom, he's dead. two more characters die in less than 10 seconds after and it's done masterfully.

besides the beginning being somewhat disjointed there were a couple of other thing i didn't like:

-  castello being an fbi informant: this was left untouched in the movie and it would've been nice if they'd spent more time on this, because it seemed to be an interesting sidestory.
- the part where castello thinks castigno's a rat and then needs to make sure that he is or is not one, just felt so dumb. it was obvious that it was a trap and it made castello look a bit amateuristic.

all in all i thought it was a pretty good movie and i can't say whether it's better than infernal affairs because i haven't seen it yet, but i definitely will.

yeah, there were some things that could've been better but overall it was a pretty good movie.

How can "fact" be distorted when there are no facts to distort? For all you know, United 93 crashed because the pilot drank a 40 of Captain Morgan before the flight. Whatever may or may not have happened, United 93 is still an amazing piece of filmmaking, whether or not its totally accurate.
