That reminds me, I picked up Pearl Jam's latest album and while its pretty good, its been so long since i've really heard anything new that 'sounds like' the rock era these kinds of groups existed in. Listening to Pearl Jam made me feel old.

It's not teh suck, but it certainly isn't great. LOTS of filler on that album. And no, I don't want to hear one pussy here try to explain the mathmatical brilliance of listening to wind blow for 7 minutes (IE the last song on the album). Or the mangled train crash that is Rosetta Stoned. Enough, it's not a classic song period: I don't want to listen to Maynard talk/ramble into a loud phone for 7 minutes before imitating Larry the Cable Guy's accent for the next 2 minutes.

If you take the needless filler off and add a couple more ACTUAL SONGS onto the album, it would be pretty great. The first two songs really kick ass, as does Wings pt II (pt I is pure filler, admit it), The Pot, and Right in Two.

I want the angry testosterone-jacked ragerock of Opiate through Aenima back. 10,000 Days has some good tunes -- Vicarious is catchy if kinda stupid lyrically, Rosetta Stoned is a great, almost Crimson-esque prog rock piece, and Jambi plays a great followup to Vicarious -- but the rest is more keening, droning moody drek of the sort that made Lateralus and the second Perfect Circle album almost unlistenable to anyone with a regular haircut schedule and a dislike of mascara. Those two Wings songs are just appallingly self-indulgent shit.

If anything, listening to recent Tool makes me love Fripp and King Crimson even MORE, and that's a GOOD thing. 20TH CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN is the anti-PhoenixDark of music and as such is still the best work of progressive rock EVER. If Tool quit letting Maynerd inject his mopey New Age gnostic shit and got back their grind, we might see them start to reach Crimson stature.  But in their current Zanax-fueled decline into the cesspit of the suicidegirls set? Not a chance.

True. 10,000 Days doesn't have that edgy, kick-you-in-the-face type sound that their older albums had. It's the kind of album that tries to be really deep and "smart", but just comes off contrived. Songs like The Pot just kick you in the balls the right way, but there isn't enough of that.

I'm amazed that so many people lie to themselves and say 10,000 Days is awesome. How can an album be awesome when it's filled with prolonged filler?

Meh. There's a few good songs, but I'm starting to see why so many people hate on them. They don't suck but any means, but it's getting a bit boring for me, even though the new album is definitely better than the last one..
