This movie really impressed me. Granted, its an anime but the director did a fantastic job of literally weaving the personal story of the main character with the story that follows her career. It had a lot of general themes that seemed to tie into what The Fountain may have been going for and ultimately arrived at a conclusion that actually spoke the message clearly.

In short, two MAF thumbs up. An animated movie from japan you shouldnt feel ashamed of owning. I actually prefer this movie over Metropolis in terms of art and style, and thats a pretty high bar to surpass.

I really liked the movie a lot, its as non-animu as an anime can get.

My favorite Satoshi Kon movie is Tokyo Godfathers, though.  Its underlying philosophy seems to be a humanist one.

how is paprika, distantmantra? wasn't that one also by satoshi kon?

Paprika was wonderful. Like everything else directed by Kon, it had a wonderful visual style and tried really hard not to fall apart and end on a "wacky Jappy" note. Susumu Hirasawa's score fit really well with the visuals (I need to track down the domestic OST tomorrow), and the opening credit sequence put the biggest grin on my face, but made me miss Tokyo at the same time.

Yeah, it's not nearly as hardcore as Dragon Ball Z.

I'm guessing the "shit smeared" thing indicates it was negative.  Cyanista is too hardcore for pussy anime like Metropolis anyway.

The message of the movie IS simple, but the music and art make it worth the price of admission.

It's a visual wankfest that put me to sleep.  Way overhyped.  A shame, as I was mostly entertained by Akira.

Mind Game was my biggest disappointment of 2006. Avoid it. I'd rather not get into that discussion in this thread, though, so start another one if you want to hear my ranting.

Millenium Actress is the best anime ever made AS I KEEP TELLING PEOPLE but I'm glad that even MAF can see and enjoy it. It's definitely the most cohesive of Kon's films.

Paprika was very good but like Perfect Blue it has some serious third act problems. Millenium Actress on the other hand comes together transcendentally.

Millenium Actress COULD have been a trainwreck at the end a la The Fountain, but ended up awesome.

Edit: Wait wait "even MAF"? wtf!

I'm still smarting from your drawing a direct connection between Will Smith in I Am Legend and Children of Men! This is why we have a gradiated scale!

Edit: Paprika's parade sequence and music alone are enough to make it worth seeing. The rest of the film is kind of secondary to that incredible metaphor.

Don't give them any ideas!  Rintaro, or whatever his name is, might make an anime version of Eyes Wide Shut.

Only way I would be sitting through that piece of shit again:

I TOLD YOU TO START ANOTHER THREAD

This one is a bout a "good" anime called Millennium Actress.

Mind Game is C-grade art school shit. I drove up to LA to see Tekkonkinkreet and Studio 4C fucked me again. If you really want me to savage it make a new thread and we'll take it outside.
