oakland is not as fucked up as people think.  I've gone out at 11:00 in downtown ALL THE TIME cause there's awesome pizza next to where I go.  I would say it's way behind richmond and a little behind berkely.  Berkely actually makes you a little scared when you go out at night alone, except for saturday night cause you can smell the pot walking down the street so most people are probably high.  illegal drugs are much worse in san francisco than in oakland.  I've been going to oakland every week since about 94 and I haven't seen anything "ghetto".

What Himuro is explicitly describing sounds exactly like paranoia.  I don't disagree that he should feel uncomfortable around southerns, everyone should, and I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he probably has experience his fair share of racism, but to justify feeling uncomfortable around white people, I think he should be able to come up with something a little better than WHITE PEOPLE ARE PRETENDING TO BE NICE TO ME AND LOOKING AT ME AND CROSSING THE STREET WHEN THEY PROBABLY DONT HAVE TO AND OTHER STUFF.
