New Annoying Trend: Update popups you can't turn off
« on: June 14, 2007, 07:10:03 AM »
Normally, any software that has an update tracker, gives you a popup with three options.  Update now, Update Later, or Don't Show Me This Again.  Now it seems the trend is to just have popups that say UPDATE NOW that you have to click off of, without any "do not update" option.  Also, if they have update later(like fricken microsoft update) that means it will continually ask you to reboot for an update you didn't ever ask for ever couple of mintues!@!@  WTF.  Who said this was a good idea?  They need a cat-o-nine-tails across the nuts. Leave me alone! I did not ask for your tiny marginal updates to continually interrupt my usage!

Yeah. MSN Messenger does this too. No I do NOT want to upgrade to shitty fucking Windows Live Messenger 8.0, stop asking me every damn week. Seriously. There is no "never update" or "turn off updates" option. Just "Ask again in 7 days." Yeah. Because if I didn't do it the last 20 weeks I'll do it today.

Isn't it for protection reasons? Because the software can be exploited, so they want you to have the newest, safest version?

On the flip side you have morons who refuse to update calling tech support for obsolete software.

I have quicktime and I get these popups for it all the time wanting me to install iTunes. I barely use quicktime as it is except to check out the occasional movie trailer, and I have no use for iTunes.

McAfee would do this to me all the time. It would pop up in the bottom right corner of my screen, and if I was playing a game it would cause me to lag. The annoying thing was that the pop up was just telling me the virus scan program expired, and no matter how many times I said I didn't want to renew it kept showing up. Finally I went into the program and just turned it off.

I also set Windows update to only pop up at 3AM

Vice versa for me. I have no need for the craptacular Windows port of Quicktime Apple. Stop bundling it with iTunes.

I don't even remember the last time I did a Windows Update. I'm living on the edge.

The only thing that i have set to autoupdate is Kaspersky and it just does it silently. Given the fact that it updates frequently throughout the day and the fact that confirmation pops are . Windows Update, Firefox, and Thunderbird have updates turned off.

Confirmation popups generally annoy the hell out of me. If i tell my computer to do something, it generally does it. Outside of random checks to make sure everything's running as it should, i assume it's doing it's task. Confirmation popups are almost as bad as setting sounds to EVERY fucking action you perform in Windows.

Well I don't like quicktime much either, it's just that there is the occasional embedded video on webpages that are in the quicktime format.
