PS2 shmups - need recommendations.
« on: June 15, 2007, 05:28:39 PM »
so i got my mas stick and hori fighting stick working on the PS3 and wanted to revisit some PS2 shmups.  right now i've got sylpheed the lost planet and raiden 3.  are there any other US releases that are worthwhile?  preferably ones with co-op, but anything in general would be good.  i want to take advantage of having proper arcade sticks until sony fucks up the next firmware revision deeming my sticks unusable.

shit, i forgot to mention i have Gradius V.   ;)

what did you think of R-type Final, being the bydo empire whore that you are?  i can't play imports since it's a NA PS3 on backwards compat.  =\  but i've been eyeing those titles you mentioned above, especially mushihime-sama.  that shit looks insane.  i may have to mod my old ps2 to play those.

i already picked up raiden 3 from gamefly, it's fantastic.  loving every minute of it -- played co-op with my woman last night and she was diggin' it as well.  soooo much better on arcade sticks.

Yeah, Raiden III is excellent.

Played The Red Star? It's plenty of fun. Quite long for this type of game, but it's well worth it if you enjoy the genres it merges.

R-Type Final isn't a very good R-Type, but it's great fanservice. 102 different ships and loads of different weapons and customization options, and a wide variety of play modes. Shame the level and boss design are so hit-or-miss.

Castle Shikigami 2 does indeed have the best localization of ALL TIME AND SPACE. For best results, pick the blonde "american ninja" character.

yeah. it was more of a swan song for the series rather than an attempt to better the almost unbetterable r-type delta.

R.A.D owns.

Did Espgaluda make it over to America or is it another JP only shmup?

Oh well. There are a lot of good looking jp only ps2 games I wanna import. We need to compile a list of worthwhile ps2 jp only games, because it seems last gen there were considerably less imports worth nothing than before.

Well it's totally a win-win situation, dude. If it sucked, I'd sell it back for just as much or more than what I bought it for; if it owned, I'd have a very collectible and rare game, which is awesome.

What's more amazing is the recycling of the first game's cover for the second game.

actually the two mobile light force games came out at the same time, and they just used the same cover for both, which cover has nothing to do with the games, and which games have nothing to do with each other. it's a masterpiece of negligence all around.

Yeah, my brother picked up Mobile Light Force 1 and 2... the first MLF (on PS1) was a conversion of Gunbird, while the second one was Shikigami no Shiro? XS really mangled both games when they brought it here... - there's a good article on InsertCredit discussing these games: http://www.insertcredit.com/reviews/mlf/index.html. To think though, XS was supposedly gonna bring ESPGaluda to these shores, but got blocked by SCEA :( :( :(

Oh yeah, while we're talking about shooters, anyone ever play SPACE SHOT on PS1? My brother bought it for like $1 at Blockbuster... it's competent, although extremely mediocre, but definitely worth it considering the price!

I'll need to compile a PSX list, don't really have the time now, but here are some PS1 shooters that were released on these shores:

In The Hunt
R-Type Delta
R-Type S (1 and 2)
G-Darius
RayStorm
RayCrisis
Thunder Force V
Einhander
SPACE SHOT
Starfighter Sanvein (not really a traditional shmup, plays more like Robotron on Ice, and can probably be picked up for < $2)
Sol Divide
Gekioh: Shooting King

Sanvein is pretty cool. It's completely unique in play style and interface/art/music design. I even like the egregious overuse of the Amen break. :p

Haven't played Final, but R-Type Delta is polished awesome.

Espgaluda's my favorite PS2 shooter. I love the slowdown mechanic, and I love whoring for huge gobs of giant medals.

Einhander has an awesome soundtrack, but I never really came to grips with the way the weapons run out of ammo.

I don't like Ibara, Mushihimesama, Radilgy... Simple 2000 Series: The Double Shienryu has a perfect port of Shienryu (which you can get on Saturn, too, for not too much more).

I dunno, looking for good shooters among US-only PS1/PS2 releases will tie one hand behind your back.

i just got my copy of castle shikigami 2 in the mail today.  got it for $10 new... but guess what, the BGM doesn't play on PS3 BC.  fuckin shit.

the game is pretty easy on "normal" mode.  so far so good, much like part 1.
