Triumph....some real talk from Matt Taibbi...

Quote
The sad truth is that if the FBI really is following anyone on the American left, it is engaging in a huge waste of time and personnel. No matter what it claims for a self-image, in reality it's the saddest collection of cowering, ineffectual ninnies ever assembled under one banner on God's green earth. And its ugly little secret is that it really doesn't mind being in the position it’'s in – politically irrelevant and permanently relegated to the sidelines, tucked into its cozy little cottage industry of polysyllabic, ivory tower criticism. When you get right down to it, the American left is basically just a noisy Upper West side cocktail party for the college-graduate class.

And we all know it. The question is, when will we finally admit it?

Good article overall.

I haven't read it yet (will do so in a moment), but I have to say that I don't get the criticism leveled at Taibbi by people who whine about "objective journalism" or "journalistic integrity".  Have those buzzwords stopped the media from becoming as impotent as my grandfather?  And my granddad can gulp a pill to fix that for a couple of hours at least- the media is just plain fucked.

Face it, folks:  objective journalism has failed.  Hunter S. Thompson called it years ago.

Let's face it; the problem with liberals is that they tend to be rich, highly educated, elite, status seekers who work for magazines like Rolling Stone. Sure, that describes me, BUT I don't where stilts nor do I own a Che t-shirt. Also, I really care about the working poor. HONEST. I'm not only better than those ugly conservatives, I am better than my fellow liberals. I AM A PROGRESSIVE.

That piece is really, really awful.  It's like the angry, distinguished mentally-challenged, abridged version of The Trouble With Kansas.

Taibbi spends most of the piece railing against privileged liberal kids and doesn't think to mention that his TV reporter dad paid for his education at Bard College?  When his main criticism of these kids is their lack of self-awareness?

It's not that he's suffering from massive cognitive dissonance.  It's that he really likes irony.

Yeah, it seems like the piece was written so he could pat himself on the back. Is there any constructive criticism in the essay?

Like Americans can find Canada on the map. Though, to be fair, sooner or later you'll bomb every nation on Earth and so you'll get to us one way or another.

I'm sure there's room for social commentary on privileged suburban kids co-opting the language and symbols of oppression, and the decline of manufacturing in the US does mean the Democratic party needs to figure out a different formula from the New Deal coalition.

I'm not about to give Taibbi points for being in the same time zone as actual insight, though.

DUH.  It's north of us, so as soon as I figure out where we are on the map you're straight FUCKED, poutine eaters.

Mandark:  so you're just gonna go straight ad hominem and ignore any interesting questions the article might raise?  You don't see any disconnect between the people running the democratic party and the people they're representing/SHOULD be representing?

"Straight ad hominem" pretty much sums up the entire Matt Taibbi piece.

Also, it's not like he's aiming the piece solely at the "people who run the Democratic party."  He's randomly spraying fire at The Left, without defining who it is.  Is it the DLC?  Academic intellectuals?  Kids in Che shirts?  This one guy I totally saw at an anti-war rally with funny makeup?  It's all straw men and shifting goalposts, pardon the cliches.

He's playing the David Brooks game, making half-assed, pseudo-sociological observations that don't stand up to an ounce of scrutiny.  No, I'm not expecting hard journalism, but this piece makes several fairly concrete claims, and most of them show that he doesn't have a clue.

Yeah, I have to agree with Mandark-this whole thing reads like a really angry, wannabe-edgy David Brooks piece.

There's a noisy and fuck annoying fringe of special interest faggotry on the left, for sure. For the most part, it cares only about itself and its interests-it's just a noisy, easily demonized sideshow. They do not represent the voting blocs of the party as a whole and are well on their way to only being relevant as a nuisance during one of their own self-indulgent protest marches.

The days of protest organizations like ANSWER and other bullshittery are over-pragmatic organizations are the future. It's why the Sierra Club is more or less dead to me, and why I give money to the LCV/Defenders of Wildlife, who represent my environmental interests by working to beat the shit out of conservative take-it-and-rape-it fucktards in actual ELECTIONS.

Whiny, self-absorbed interest groups  are NOT the face or the representation of the modern left activist. The modern left is highly partisan and dedicated to winning, and isn't afraid of aggressive tactics and dirty political warfare to get what they want. They realize that there are, in the end, two options-a Democrat and a Republican, and in the end the Democrat might actually vote for things they care about, while the Republican usually won't. They know what they are fighting for and fighting against.

As for alienating the working poor or the people displaced structurally by the global economy, well, I think the liberal plan for these people-social support, education, and security-is far better than the "HAW HAW FIX IT YOURSELF DIRTY POORS" conservative approach.

Hahaha, knew you'd latch on to the anti-DLC/anti-leadership stuff.  It's what, 10% of the piece, though?  If that.

Explain how the other 90% isn't horribly sloppy and rambling.  Come on.

Did I say that?  I'm not expecting journalism (hell, I read half a dozen analysis pieces for every straight "news" story I read), but even a rant should be focused, coherent, and not wildly contradictory.

I mean, he raises Bernie Sanders up as a model the party should be following, because he won a blue state in 2006, the year every damn Democrat won?  lulz.  Journalism or not, he is making arguments, and a good number of them are just stupid.

You want a real man's rant, try Phil Nugent.

On Jerry Falwell.

On Don Imus.
