What are the best games featuring giant robots?
« on: June 18, 2007, 04:18:41 AM »
I'm interested in people's opinions on this...I mean, we all know about Zone of the Enders because of the Kojima pedigree, but are there any other games featuring giant robots that I might be missing out on?  Of the ones I've played:

1. Zone of the Enders 1 and 2: Pretty awesome, but way too short.

2. Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 and 2: They're good games, but you don't really get the feeling you're controlling a gigantic killing machine.

3. Mobile Suit Gundam Climax U.C.: Surprisingly awesome for a licensed game.

4. Mobile Suit Gundam: The One Year War 0079: Ditto.  This one was made by Namco.  The graphics are gorgeous.

5. Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny: Rengou Vs. Zaft II Plus: The TV series is supposedly shit, but this is an awesome fighting game, reminiscent of...

6. Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram: The original and still best fighter featuring mecha.

7. Cyberbots: 2D giant robot asskicking awesomeness from Capcom, who also made the sexxcellent 3D fighter...

8. Tech Romancer: A 3D fighter featuring various types of robots ripped off from anhimation and science fiction tropes.  One of DC's most underrated gems.

Edit: I don't like sim type games like Armored Core, and I'm not a fan of the Front Mission series.

That one sounds really neat.  It's the one where your character has a remote control for the robot.  I need to play that.

The only American game featuring robots that comes to mind is the Mech Warrior series and I was never a big fan of that.

I've always loved Virtual On. Only played the first, I heard the others suck.

yeah I got assraped all the time too playing as sal kar.

From Software (good sega) made that game.  Has decent set of online modes and very good graphics (you will fucking explode when you see the heat and night vision).

I heard tarakia has the best stuff after sal kar?

Yeah it's easily one of my favorite 360 games because it takes REALLY deep mech sim customization and makes it fun and have huge explosions basically.  Really big explosions.  Like, no other game let's you literally set a mech's ass on fire online.  It takes about 6 hours of singleplayer (not all of the singleplayer) to be able to start off well enough in a squad.  The controls aren't hard to learn but customizing a mech takes a lot of practice with mechs so you know how they act when say their ass has flames coming out of it.

Is this the one that came out a couple of years back, based on...what was the show called, Armada or something?

GUNDAM MUSOU!!!! Ahem, now that I've got that out of my system, I'll continue.

I second DC's nomination of the Another Century's Episode series. So what if they're made by FROM Software, they're the closest thing we've got to another ZOE. And all the different anime licenses don't hurt, either.

Also, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Ace Pilot on the Gamecube is totally sweet.

Any good Macross games? :( I played a demo for one that was for psx back in the day, and while it wasn't that good, I still liked it just because it was Macross. :-[

I always wanted to get that for my Xbox, but I could never justify the high price tag back when I was a poor college student.

Speaking of Another Century's Episode, I have an extra copy of the first one that I'd be willing to part with for $10. Anyone interested?

These are the best mech games in each genre IMO

RPG = Xenogears (For last gen, Xenosaga Episode III was the best by far)

SRPG = Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

Fighter = Tech Romancer

Fast Paced Action = Zone of the Enders

Slower Paced Action = Robot Alchemic Drive

I have the old Saturn 2D shooter (Macross: Do You Remember Love?).  How does this compare to it?

EDIT: I've actually seen the box for that at some game stores but for some reason I just assumed it was the Japanese version of Battlecry, the US-developed Robotech game.

This is a fully 3D title, developed by Sega AM2. It's much better than Battlecry. MUCH BETTER.

Check out a promotional trailer for the game:

I rented Cromehounds.  I was really wanting to play it, but didn't like it as much as I thought. :(  I dunno, I was hoping for a deeper single player experience, but its more of an online game (Meh, I prefer mech single player games over online, but that's because I just don't like playing online).

I actually wasn't thinking of 2D fighter. :o  I never played a 2D fighting mech game, shockingly.  Always wanted to try Gundam Battle Assault on PS1.

The online play plays basically the same as the singleplayer.  Only you don't fight much other than hounds and you have teammates actually worth having.  It was designed that if you got 6 people together, you would vary the roles but you could take 3 sniper/soldier/scout classes and have a lot of fun.  It required a lot more thought than other mech games because how you customized your mech radically affected what you'd do in the match.  In singleplayer you could be cheap and choose all weapons that are good for taking out small things/reloading fast or weigh down with big guns depending on the mission type.  Online, the squad usually takes 5 minutes to redesign their mechs before going on a mission when they meet so they don't all have a disadvantage.
