every time i hear this song i'm surprised by how much it kills -- you remember it as a novelty record, but there's a part in the middle that could almost be joy division

Joy Division may seem like mac and cheese today, but they were pretty much the first peeps to play out that ultra-mopey act. And Closer doesn't have anything less than a great song on it. Unknown Pleasures has its bouts with mediocrity, though. Joy Division is the real deal.

Lou is just incredibly hit or miss, and his career is rather top-loaded.

I love Lou a lot. I have all of his major albums despite knowing better. I have seen him live at least 4 times, too.

But Mandark's theory falls apart when you take New Order into account. Nobody dislikes New Order. Heck, even on Get Ready, they managed to make a song with Billy Corgan without having Corgan ruin it. That's talent. And the roots of New Order can be heard quite firmly in Joy Division, and Joy Division can be heard quite clearly in early New Order.
