I hate double dipping on DVDs... :(
« on: June 20, 2007, 05:17:03 AM »
..but sometimes you have to.  Criterion just announced a new version of Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise.  DVD Journal states that it's the first Region 1 release of this title, but they're mistaken, as I have the previous MGM release.  Though I generally avoid double-dips if there's no noticeable image quality improvement, in this case I think I'm going to have to pick it up since the original DVD was so bare bones (and, I believe, non-anamorphic).  Criterion is also releasing Night On Earth which actually HASN'T come out on DVD before, so that's nice...will they do a DVD for Ghost Dog next?  One can only hope...except I already bought that DVD too. :/

There are a number of other DVDs that I've bought that had subsequent special editions released (I figured I was safe from this happening since they were all pretty old movies): Rio Bravo, Ran, The Third Man, Seven Samurai, M, The Maltese Falcon...it irks me to know that I own an inferior version, and that I'd have to spend extra cash to upgrade.  I hate double dipping (I've only done it a couple of times, when the SE of Memento came out - and regret it immensely due to that special edition's shitty menu; and when the "director's cut" of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly came out).

i bought the regular edition of collateral (awesome movie btw) but later i saw the se so i traded it in for that. i hate the cover, it's really really ugly, for the se and the extras aren't really worth the extra and i had this obsession with wanting to buy the regular edition again (couldn't trade it anymore) just for the cover.

in the end i didn't, though.

I fear the day when more Almodovar titles hit Blu Ray. I just got the recent Viva Pedro boxset, but I'm all over more of his films in HD, due to the cinematography and his use of color.

Same with Wong Kar-Wai. I'll have to double dip.  :'(

The description sounds like an animu.  At any point does the chick uppercut the dude so hard that he flies into the air and becomes a sparkle in the sky?  Does his head ever comically become wedged between the chick's breasts?

whiteman, i thought you hated fear and loathing?

I don't particularly.  I have it for the sake of my complete Gilliam collection, plus I think I got a deal on it.

For movies I own but don't like. . .the Kurosawa movies.  They generally bore me, but I constantly find myself buying new ones, hoping that they will be the ones that make him click.  I find the movies his work inspired much more interesting.

Yeah, I used to be obsessed with Criterions back in college (which is evident by the majority of my movies being the mid 100's), but I just can't justify buying too many these days...

15. Samurai II
16. Samurai III
52. Yojimbo
53. Sanjuro
57. Charade

75. Chasing Amy
116. The Hidden Fortress
135. Rebecca
136. Spellbound
137. Notorious
138. Rashomon
140. 8 1/2
147. In the Mood for Love
151. Traffic
155. Tokyo Olympiad

353. Solo con tu Pareja

Heh, I got the Criterion, and like the very same day I found the better, non-Criterion version at Fred Meyer.  I think that Crit was only 20, anyway.

I also got the Robocop one on ebay, and only later realized that the non-Criterion was better.  I also double-dipped on Brazil and The Third Man.

Just serves to illustrate my aversion to double-dipping of any kind. I still have a functioning VCR hooked up to my TV, and most of the VHS movies I have are comedies anyhow, so I've never seen the need to buy the DVDs of them.

But they are likely all fullscreen and since DVD it's painful and horribly obvious to watched cropped films .
