SEGA AND BIOWARE COLLABORATE ON NEW SONIC ROLE PLAYING GAME FOR THE NINTENDO DS

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (Thurs 21st June 2007) -- SEGA® Europe, Ltd., SEGA® of America, Inc. and Canada-based developer studio BioWare® Corp. today announced a partnership to create a new video game based on the classic SEGA flagship icon, Sonic The Hedgehog. The exact name of the game is undetermined, but this new title developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS will ship in 2008.

“BioWare is one of the hottest names in RPG development in the world,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc. “Everyone at SEGA has huge confidence that Sonic is in the safest of hands, and that BioWare can create the ultimate handheld RPG experience for gamers of all ages.”

Why not? Mario was made into one, and that was done by one of the (arguable) best JRPG makers, now Sonic is being done by one of the (arguable) best western RPG makers.

Yes, but Sonic is all about speed, and I can't really imagine RPGs conveying any sense of speed.

Mario is all about going through pipes and eating mushrooms to get big and people don't complain about Mario rpgs.

Yeah and SMRPG was pretty much standard genre fair for the time with a Mario palette and some crappy jumping sections.

Sonic RPG is even stupider. What a waste of developer resources.

I just have difficulty imagining Sonic sitting around waiting for his turn in a turn based battle, or trying to run along and having random encounters every couple of seconds.

Um.......

Play a Bioware or any western rpg in general, then comment. They don't have random battles, and many of them are action rpg based now.

I have played many Bioware RPGs, Kotor is probably my favorite game of last gen, but I don't see those kinds of games being possible on the DS. If they pull it off then cool, I just don't see it happening.

a bioware on the ds?

who gives a shit?

you couldn't even faithfully port BG2, a decade old game, to the DS.

that's how shit the system is.

Seriously. Have you seen some of the concepts for stories/settings people are coming up with on GAF? RPG Maker level bullshit is what I called it.

That was my first thought too. Hopefully this is just some b-team newhires getting their feet wet with somew supervision and won't affect the real games they are making there.

Still, another nod to Sega for at least admitting that they can't make anything but arcade games anymore and handing off work to good Western game houses instead.

I'm more of a JRPG fan (not really into western RPGs much).  If I was, I'd probably fall in love with Bioware RPGs.

I'm much more interested in Sonic DS than Mass Effect, personally. Something about Mass Effect doesn't sit right with me, either its the Star Wars-ish art or the squad based tactical combat style battle system, or my disappointment with Jade Empire... I dunno...
