The Hills Have Eyes remake is surprisingly not horrible, by the way.  That said, if you're not going to go gung ho with Carpenter, why not try the previous genre entry from the Hills remake director (Alexandre Aja) - High Tension.  That's a lot of fun.

wasn't The Descent just The Cave with lesbians? I've seen The Exorcist and Shaun of the Dead a number of times, and I the Final Destination movies just for their Rube Goldbergian approaches to slaughtering dumb teenagers. The second was the best, for sure.

I shall check out Slither and Fright Night, although I like my horror to be more occult creepy than WACKY EVIL MONSTER.

Fright Night is vampires, gosh.  Silver Bullet is a pretty good oldie, too, as far as more classical horror goes.

The Descent is a surprisingly good film.  The subplots of what might have otherwise been a perfectly boring cave creature movie (a la the cave, how dare you) were actually sort of subtle.  That movie made me feel emotions and shit - anger, hope, shock.

Someone mentioned High Tension, too.  That was decent. Far down the queue, though.
