They didn't even start writing it until late December/January 2007. Plus it's a 20+ episode season, so there's a lot more work to be done this time. And it is still all hand animated.

Confession: I saw the first episode, thought it was kind of bleh, and didn't bother watching until almost a year later, catching Trial Of The Monarch and Are You There God? It's Me, Dean, which converted me.

I'm so completely sold on this show. By season 2, I really think it became the best thing on TV, cartoon or live action.

It definitely took like half of season 1 for them to figure out exactly what they were doing. Season 2 is so much better than season 1.

Most people would probably consider them a mixed bag, because they go off topic a lot and every now and then it drags.

But both guys are good talkers and pretty naturally funny, and you get a lot of tidbits about what the ideas were like before they got fleshed out.

There's a bit in Look Who's Coming To State Dinner, where they have Michael Sinterniklaas (voice of Dean) doing guest commentary, and Doc Hammer goes on this GREAT rant about how much he resents Sinterniklaas for his seemingly easy life.

Speaking of off-topic. . .I remember the commentary track for the infamous fan favorite Bizarro episode of Sealab 2021. It was nearly a full crew commentary, and they all totally *hated* the episode because it was so annoying to make. I thought that was kind of a funny disconnect--the fans loved it, the crew hated it.

I recall a particularly funny remark about the poor female cast member that had to repeat BIZARRO in an orgasmic fashion for a period of time. That must've been a pretty BIZARRE production to be on.

For the most part, I think Jackson and Doc are sympatico with the fans' tastes. They do talk about how Dean's become a favorite of the female fans, and how Trianna's friend was a hit. (Jackson: "That surprised me, she's really popular." Doc: "Duh. She's hot!")

Listening to them rag on Love Bheits and Guess Who's Coming To State Dinner is fun. Jackson talks about how he thought LB was going to be great when he finished writing it (it was his first script of the year), but after it came back, he swore not to write for Unterbite again.

That's really cool, because those are the only two weak points of season 2. Nice to see they are on the same page as the fans. I personally think Underbheit is just a lame character. I dig Catclops and Girl Hitler though. Great characters.

Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner ended up falling too far on the side of OMG WACKY what with ghost lincoln and all that nonsense. IIRC, that episode was the one written by the Ex-Tick head writer or something, right?

I don't think it's a bad episode, but it is weak in comparison to the material around it.

Nah, Publick wrote it. There's some exchange in the commentary where he's joking about some awful plot he's going to use for a future episode, Hammer says "You're going to write the worst episode ever!" and Publick says "I already did."

Ben Edlund, the Tick guy (who actually created the comic, IIRC) actually wrote ¡Viva los Muertos! Which is pretty surprising, since that's easily the most fucked-up episode of the entire season. It's a long way from Tick-land.

There were approximately 2 years between seasons 1 and 2, also.

Look at it this way: be glad they aren't rushing them. It's one of the best shows on the channel, and the AS ratings and DVD sales say so. I would rather wait than have them rush season 3, really.

Oh damn, you're right about the gap between season 1/2. Season 1 ended in like December 2004 right?

And yeah, it's nice that they're taking their time to make sure the quality remains high.

Haven't been keeping up with the sales, but glad to see that it's doing good. Especially after such a long hiatus.

Yeah, they know they can pretty much count on having a paycheck after they finish 3, so they can get right to work on writing and making assets for 4 rather than waiting 6 months to see if they get a deal.

Even still, there's animation time. During season 2, there were 2 gaps because they were not satisfied with the animation. Rather than release an unsatisfactory product, they delayed for fixes. These people like their animation.
