She has this big plasma screen that probably eats children when they're not around, so I'm lookign for one that ups to HD.

Looks just fine to me. Although, I'd recommend getting one of the Samsung upconverting players, since they can be easily hacked to play all regions.

But, I'm guessing your mom probably doesn't care about that.

Yes. But if your mom has no interest in buying HD-DVDs (and I'd recommend against her jumping into the HD format war right now), an upconverting player will do her just fine.
