There's also a new episode of Girls tonight. I think the third season's been great so far and this episode will be directed by the woman behind "But I'm a Cheerleader" which was a delightfully kitschy coming-of-age movie about a homosexual "correction" camp. Really curious to see what she does with this show.

But Michael Bay...
He has surprisingly little involvement with the plot or the writing, which is at turns generic and also surprisingly witty. It helps that Black Sails is actually a prequel to the novel Treasure Island.

and also Looking is a supremely good, if quiet and intimate, sub-altern gay show. Better than Girls, in terms of both drama and comedy.

Was actually one single shot. I saw a couple points that I thought might be edits, but apparently they were put as potential edit points if needed. Cary decided against it and the take we saw was uncut.

So regarding True Detective:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
How many innocent people do you think died as a result of that raid? Is capturing one guy, even if he's a serial killer, worth the possible bloodbath that happened offscreen in that raid?

I imagine this will be the topic of discussion for the next episode or two within the narrative.  For Rust?  absolutely, the dude gives 0 fucks about casualties at this point.

Season 1 is a little bland and slow. You get seeds of what the characters will become (at least Cesare's scheming/Pope Borgia's douchebaggery), but it really comes into its own in Season 2 as it not only gets more episodes but a longer arc. The second to last episode of Season 2 is brilliant drama.

It really helps to have a bit of a background in Borgia history, too. There's a few real-life events that translate very well to the show like the Banquet of the Chestnuts and the Siege of Forli, the latter of which the Ass Creed games covered as well. The show ended before they got into the really fucked up parts of their family history, though.

Yes, True Detective is damn mighty fine. From reading commentaries, it seems that the show not focusing on solving the case and the overall pace being slower is too much a problem for some. However, this is the sort of thing I wanted ever since The Killing tried its hand at delaying satisfaction. It's Freudian as shit, but there's more to the approach than that.

was thinking about this more and i found two points of contention

1) they were playing BDP in the white strip club in 1995 Louisiana.  They should have been playing some butt rock.  Probably Warrant's Cherry Pie

2) during the shoot out they played Wu Tang Clan.  It probably should have been something from No Limit.

It probably should have been something from No Limit.

Sometimes there are good reasons to sacrifice authenticity, and I'd argue that avoiding Master P is one of them.

Yeah, viewership was too low even for Showtime standards. Though I suspect it was more that the budget was ballooning too large and they couldn't sustain it because of said low (even for Showtime) viewership. I think I read that it was the most expensive Showtime show during its run, just because of the authentic sets and the on-location shooting in Italy. Thankfully, the show is fucking gorgeous to look at and its cinematography is ace.

It ends more like a season finale would in S3, with seeds of where it was going to go into a fourth and possible fifth season. It wasn't the worst series finale you could have, but it definitely left me wanting.

While I agree some Three 6 Mafia or No Limit shit would have technically been realistic, Wu was fucking perfect for the tone of the scene. Good lord

I want to watch House of Cards but I committed to finish watching Dexter before I move on to something else :-\

Speaking of which, holy shit, that show fell apart during its fifth season.  Julia Stiles is a godawful actress, it should have been a warning sign that the people behind the show thought she was capable of exhibiting the emotions necessary to make her character believable.  Season six redeems itself until the two stupid and shitty twists at the end.  Season seven is toilet tier, even Titus Pullo couldn't redeem that steaming pile.  Now I'm working my way through season eight, which is wtf after wtf.
🍆🍆
