Since you’re doing the work of watching this, does it ever start to actually follow the plot of the comics?

lol no, they aren't going to do that on broadcast TV, probably not even basic cable...though i don't know exactly what you mean by follow the comic, because like do you mean the first ten issues or so where it's just Lucifer owning a Night Club and existing in LA, or the next few issues where he frees Michael, chases down his daughter, and goes to war with a bunch of angels and demons and burns down Lux, or like the last fifty or so issues where they create his own universe, it deals with the politics of hell, major battles and plots happen to destroy all forms of creation and God abandons heaven?

it's been doing its own thing in the second and third season that's quite different but fun, they've built up a quality ensemble, the lore has fleshed out

this season has been a bit disjointed because they took four standalone episodes (based around side characters, humans in a number of cases, Mazikeen in one) that were going to end last season after the arc concluded, and reworked them and stuck them into this seasons arc, but starting with the next episode we get back to it and it will have the rest of the extended season, they also used some of those to bring back "lucifer's mom" after the actress turned out to be a great addition to the cast in the second season, though Ella the religiously positive forensic girl is still the best second season addition

lucifer's actually kinda been a bit annoying this season because they retrofit him into more scenes of some of the hold over episodes that were out of place (it looks like had these four been done last year as originally intended he would have barely appeared in two of them, and only as the impetus for a character in another, along with the episode where he and Ella go on a road trip to Vegas), and delayed his own season arc after the second season finale and first two episodes of this season started off running with it as his focus much like the second season where the "case of the weeks" often happened to intertwine with the larger angels/demons plot lucifer was investigating on his own, though they started to lampshade it the last two episodes by everyone, including himself realizing this in the last episode, pointing out how boring he's become and how tired his "i'm the devil!" schitck is...just in time for him to meet the villain of the season and start the season proper

they have done some suggesting that God may have abandoned heaven shortly after Lucy abandoned Hell...Lucifer and Amenadiel are convinced that dad is trying to teach them each a lesson of some kind through events on Earth..."Mum" was exiled to and trapped in Hell by God and got out at the end of the first season, so the second season arc was her reconnecting with "her boys" and plotting a way to get back at her ex and they did some playing around with the "good son"/"bad son" component of the two and what exactly that means if "dear old dad's" directions aren't exactly clear and concise

there's a number of things they've kept true to the comic, like how Lucifer never tells a lie, is offended by all the tales made up about him, especially anything that implies he's not a man of his word, the first season didn't really go there but from the second season on they've made it a point that Lucifer explains that the people in Hell want the torture and punishment out of their own guilt, he never did it for his pleasure it was punishment to him by dad, which is part of why he left Hell, which was one of the comic's premises too

Mazikeen semi-quit as a bartender and became a bounty hunter on the side which seemed appropriate and an acceptable change, also making her the cops roommate and sometimes babysitter...the second season also revealed to Lucifer's therapist that it's not metaphors from a crazy guy, he's actually Lucifer and there are angels and so on, so that's been fun

in some ways, for the greater myth arc, it does feel like it has gone directions that Constantine could have gone had it continued, especially with the angel character of the first season who mostly did a bunch of cryptic warning and freezing time...but it's stuck closer to the procedural and "fun" aspect rather than dour and doomed nature of Constantine, like Lucifer often gets frustrated with the case of the week, especially if it's not demons or some con or some crazy drama involved to liven it up and tries to hurry things up, and also they brought more characters into the ensemble fully while Constantine only really started to use Zed at the end there

the show was originally adapted by the guy who created/did Californication and while I didn't watch a lot of that I can see the similarities especially in the first season and overall presentation of Lucifer's life during it, but the guy who took over shortly after it started was part of the writers on/or was showrunner on White Collar/Graceland/Almost Human and it's got the same humor as White Collar really...Lucifer is generally like some weird mix of Lucifer, Neal Caffrey and Shawn Spencer

which i guess would make Amenadiel Burton Guster...Lucy even does a joke fake name introduction :ohhh

I went on a bit because I was trying to think of ways it compared to the comic and where it did things different but not necessarily worse, especially considering it's on FOX. So you hit a double nerve of the benji effect, my comic lore nonsense and a related TV show. :lol

I loved the comic, even the recent short series return. Even more than The Sandman from which it spun.

When I saw "Lucifer adaption, he solves crimes for the LAPD" and then the trailer they released for its first episode where it was nothing but devil and sex jokes, obvious music choices and frighteningly awful choices for HOT SCENES I watched it because I needed to punish myself. (To be fair, the show does do all this, but it's often more a bit tongue in cheek, and generally everyone but Lucifer is annoyed at him making such jokes.)

Then they started the show off like this and I didn't know if I'd truly survive more than a couple episodes even though the main lead seemed like he could be good as Lucifer:

But I was surprised, it has become more clever than it had any right to be. Especially as it's gone on and introduced all the mythology. And it did adapting of stuff from the comic to fit the show, and they've changed the cases from being the focus of the show to be little more than as premises for Lucifer to explore the ongoing plots.

I'd argue that now that it's found its footing, even with the wonky episode mismash to start this season, that it's good. It won't be the comic, it can't, but it trickles out just enough, and most of the main actors are good. Plus Constantine bombed (despite another perfect lead), and this scratches that itch, if he has to solve LAPD crimes instead of supernatural ones each week so that we can get his brothers and his mother and some of the characters they've talked about adapting over, then that's the price to pay and I'll gladly pay it. Someone in the YouTube comments compared it to Forever without elaborating and I guess there's some of that here.

I actually didn't know how many ties it had to White Collar until I looked up the showrunner when making that post. It's handling the ongoing plots much better than that show ever did, really, White Collar had better cases of the week than the stupid season mysteries and crap. But it also had a fun ensemble when they let them in. Lucifer seems to have learned from that as other than Mazikeen's odd disappearances (I think the actress had a scheduling conflict, so that's why she's "bounty hunting" in Mexico or whatever) they really let everybody play a role, it's not all "Lucifer/Neal/Shawn is the best, everyone else follows his lead and is dumb" nonsense.

Look at that, I'm rambling again.

Don't expect the comic, it keeps him grounded on Earth (no pun intended) rather than the comic quickly ditching the whole Lux facade to chase new realities and wars in heaven. But there's decent good here, there's fun here. It's letting its human characters explore the realities of finding out about heaven and hell and everything while sticking to the comics notions that there isn't a grand cosmic plan for everyone, it doesn't make sense on our level, and how part of Lucifer's rebellion is his refusal to go along with this fiction that otherwise makes everything work. But he's probably not going to be rebelling by starting his own universe or anything anytime soon, if ever.

Like noted, it mostly is something to stick on that's enjoyable while maybe doing other stuff, I know I enjoy it more than most and I don't sit watching it sucked in 100%, and then stopping to watch certain scenes when they get good because they're strutting up close to the themes of the comic even if having to do it in another way.

Anyone watching the German made 'Dark'?. Seems to deal with time travel from what I could gather from the first episode. Some of the imagery is fantastic. Cold, yet still vibrant. Feels like a Fincher flick, at least aesthetically.

Also, turn off the dubbing and turn on the subs unless you understand German, you genetically superior being.

Punisher's been pretty impressive so far. Elektra works within the context of the TV show. Stick is FUCKING GREAT. The Hand showed up tonight, in all their "Matt can't hear them" glory, but I've been told they're a disappointment. First couple of fights with them have been pretty damned great.

Also, I hated DD's costume at first, but now I like it.

A friend wanted to watch The Punisher. So we've watched 4 episodes of it and it seems pretty bland...

Full disclouse, super-hero stuff is not a turn on to me. I've watched no super hero tv show in the modern era. I did have a desire to watch Jessica Jones and Luke Cage but haven't gotten around to it. I like to think I have an open mind and can enjoy anything that is decent though.

This feels like a boring show about PTSD and the boring parts of some FBI style show about the War on Terror.

So I finished this up.

I give it on the whole a slight thumbs up. On a scale of ten maybe a 5 or 6. I mean this is a very flawed show but I think the second half is much better than the first half. The PTSD and FBI/CIA/Government procedural stuff I still think stinks. Both elements seem out of place and/or vaguely insulting.

The show increasingly gets more ludicrous and stupid with the plotting as it goes on but that's a good thing. It stops trying to pretend its something important and basically ups the action and starts creating bad guys to kill. It becomes more like how I envision a comic book should be and less like something that wants to pretend its "real".

The show works when its about a dumb dude who goes on killing rampages echoing corny Stallone/Rambo-eqsue action scenes. It works best when its dumb and simple. The second half of the show focuses more on that.

There was a lot here not to like. But I enjoyed the back half enough to say the investment of time was worth it. I did not feel that way early on.

Not sure if I ever need to see another season of this though. There really isn't a lot of room in this universe imo to do diverse things. The hero is too simplistic blunt and dumb for that. But then there isn't a lot of TV where a dumb guy just goes on killing sprees for "justice" so maybe that niche makes it worthwhile.

Last two eps of Curb were lame. This was definitely the weakest season overall.

There were a couple of good episodes early on and funny moments within other episodes but yeah overall I thought it was the weakest season of the show run.

I miss Cheryl. You need a counter to kind of keep Larry in check a bit. Level him off. Without that, Larry can feel a little annoying as he is reacting to everything without any one to check him.

I felt similar to new Curb as I did to Logan Lucky. If you're going to make a big comeback after years of absence, "good" isn't going to cut it. If you're going to do one, there'd better be a good reason.

I love it. I can see some people not liking the characters, but if you hate white millenials, you’ll probably like it.

I made a similar comment about it earlier.

Just finished Search Party. Glad this is getting a second season. Doesn't sound like anyone watched it, but it's top notch.

Good show although I couldn't tell that early on. In fact I kind of disliked it after the first few episodes until I realized you are kind of supposed to actively hate everybody on it.
