Ontario numbers were decent again today and we did 2700 more test.  Also  CBC just said the fed gov has approved 2 new methods for testing too, which will just increase our capacity.

I received an email from my MD today to say he had symptoms.

My dumb ass was sitting in his office yesterday making sure he was setup to work from home.

Again a day of action and reaching out to clients for me.
Remember folks, crisis = opportunity.

Losers will become winners, winners losers. The board has been flipped.

Our government has also announced substantial aid packages for businesses.
Covering up to 90% of salaries, tax exemptions/delays and loans up to 1.5 million for small businesses.

It seems that lessons from 2008 have actually been learned.  :thinking

As for the virus, our approach is working so far. The worst news of the day other than new infections was that the train services will see a further scale back.
The Government has clarified that herd immunity is not a goal in and by itself. They're trying to keep an open society and economic activity as much as possible without overstretching the healthcare system.

Dutch researches have also discovered that with a plasma sterilisator that is available in most hospitals you can sterilize and clean face masks up to 3 times.

In other words:
- We've discovered the anti-body for COVID-19
- We've discovered that TB vaccines improve resistance against COVID-19
- We've discovered a way to re-use face masks

In the span of a week.

Tensions in the workforce of garbage collecting and delivery drivers (postmen or private services) for a severe undersupply if not absence of masks & sanitising gel.

Some Chinese associations sent 1m masks to France (on top of that Xiaomi donation), which is appreciated -though I just heard a few time today some disgruntlement about the French donation of 17 tons of medical material earlier that year to fight the Wuhan crisis, I think it's neither here nor there though French healthcare could certainly do with more today and in general-.

So far what I've seen, smoking seems to correlate with worse outcomes.
Ibuprofen maybe also correlates with worse outcomes, nothing guaranteed but switch to Tylenol/acet for some time just for caution.

I was assuming smoking was probably the reason why the male/female death ratio in Italy was like 3:1.

Pretty sure it is the case in China, male mortality outstrips female there and it lines up with smoking trends.

French government is working on a bill for "state of medical emergency powers" that would give them the ability to further limits freedoms (movement, meeting) on a local or national scale. Probably in case they want to enforce harsher quarantines and the capacity to requisition whatever is deemed necessary to fight an outbreak.

Hopefully the rapid progress in tests will allow for a more targeted and efficient crisis managing in the next weeks.

Basically so far the Paris and Great East regions are the most battered (over 2000 cases each, so over 40% of all French positives). A special army medical plane (fully equipped for reanimation) moved six patients to the East to a less burned hospital.

My surgeon will call this afternoon and I'll know if my Friday surgery is still on or not.

Is it normal that people have 2 fridges? Or is that like a "if you have a family" thing? I don't remember my family ever having 2 fridges and I've never had two. But my friends are showing my their family's prepper set and they all seem to have 2 fridges as well.

We have a full size freezer in the garage that was originally purchased when my wife was breastfeeding our daughter, and now it's full of frozen berries, freezer meals that she's made in the past and lots of ground beef, pork and chuck roast from Costco. I've also got a little fridge in the garage for beer.

Also really glad we have an elliptical in the garage.

So what's the deal with Germany ? Honestly I think France could have ramped up to an Italian-style lockdown 4 days earlier, and Germany is lagging from the same amount behind us. Fatalities are still "low" and I guess Germany tests better and wider (catching a lot of milder cases) so maybe the infection is at an earlier stage compared to Italy, Spain, France but every empirical data is pointing to the situation to deteriorate at the hospital & care level in similar proportions.

I mentioned it in jest earlier in this thread, but Germans have a high trust in authorities and they are obedient. Of course there are exceptions, but even without a mandated curfew, the cities are absolute ghost towns. I live in one of the biggest cities and there is nobody on the streets. Just some tidbits of French info, to give an idea of what's probably ahead for US, UK and Germany.

Paris region transports are scaling down tomorrow : half the subways, tramways and trains. 70% buses. Night bus lines at 100% because used by a lot of hospital workers.

Obligation to desinfect public transport vehicles now by law.

Paris Transport Regie estimates there was 80 to 90% less passengers than usual.

Edit : in the comments of Le Figaro (conservative) about those numbers "Always a good excuse to slack off work !"

Good.
Honestly I think French (and Italian, perhaps) media (and Internet) are a bit hyperbolic about the "incivility' and "lack of discipline" of our "Latin" citizenry and hyperfocuses on outliers to give moral lectures because three people are on some piazza. Data like the Paris transport stats show that by and large there's a massive reduction in crowds outside and that people try to comply.

I've seen Le Figaro, of all places, have an article about the moral weight of this social isolation. It fucking sucks to not seeing a friend, have a drink, etc... in a painful way, humans are not wired to be permanent NEETs. Yeah it's regrettable that people in the US went to St Patrick's parties or are massing at beaches (there was some examples in Europe a week ago) but the "son I am disappoint" attitude cuts both ways : Western governments have arguably downplayed this until a few weeks ago, sent mixed messages. Yes, it's sad that people only start to realize the gravity of this when it starts to creep close but I wouldn't cast the first stone.

We're told to be responsible but it's hard to get tested, hard or impossible to get masks and gloves, hard to get hand sanitizer, hard to get a thermometer even.

I think a fun way for us to pass the coming months at home would be a friendly bore competition, like who can pee in the most pop bottles? or who can collect the most nail clippings? (not necessarily your own.  Pee must be yours.).
