It's kinda weird how everything is doom and gloom on the internet, there were even preparations to quarantine Stockholm. One op ed talks about shutting down the country in order to save it.

And then you go outside and everything is just.. normal. The park is full of people, kids were practicing football despite freezing temperatures and there are no hoarders in the shops. All stores are out of face masks apparently, but i have yet to see someone wear one. Some of my neighbours are having a bbq in the common yard.

The contrast is a bit surreal tbh

Yeah, with things like the schools are closing and some of the workforce being told to remote work from home, you're going to just see kids in parks and stuff during the day. There's not enough manpower to enforce them to stay at home.

Schools aren't closed though. Not yet at least.

So my surgery, which is scheduled for this coming Friday, might get canceled. I spoke to my surgeon yesterday and the CDC sent down guidelines that all surgeries that are not absolutely necessary need to be delayed for one month. The UW wants to hold off only two weeks, but after talking to my surgeon and telling him how I'm feeling we're keeping my March 20th date, but he is going to call back on Wednesday and if things are worse and not safe for me to be there (ie. they're using the Cardiac ICU and OR for Covid patients) they're going to cancel and then we'll have no idea when it will be scheduled. Could be two weeks, a month, six weeks, no clue.

Sorry man.  Hope things work out.

Thanks. My wife and I had a good conversation with my surgeon yesterday, after getting a customary "your surgery is canceled for now" call from the scheduler earlier in the day.

I understand their concerns and the risk placed on me. The hard thing is how long can I hold out and wait? The last time I had surgery I was in heart failure and ended up in the ER. I don't want that to happen again.

Don Rumata, updates from inside the quarantine? Have people started eating each other yet? How many people have you had to kill just to survive? Do the roving gangs use guns or more primitive weapons?
Here's the mayor of Bari closing down a park and telling people to go home.

Are you in Bari, Don?  I'm from Molfetta.

EDIT: Just caught up, Good luck Gundam.
Are they afraid you'll catch it during recovery? Is that a big risk inside a hospital?

Apparently all non-essential shops to be closed in France. I also saw numbers for today about new cases and if accurate it was good (pretty level with yesterday), though France was testing less than other neighboring countries.

Shit, it's gonna be a pain to buy cigarettes if all tobacco shops have to close.

Tobacco stores are deemed essential so won't all close. :preach
I guess I'll see how it works because most tobacco shops (95%+ I'd say, at a total guess) are inside cafés/bars in France.

SK
Total cases: 7,979
Current infected: 7,398

https://twitter.com/BBCLBicker/status/1238336700532711424

serious case as % of current = 1.23%
critical as % of current = 0.80%

if you're optimistic, then you're are sure cases are considerably underreported, therefore the mild:serious ratio is >19

Update of numbers

total 8,086
active 7,300

serious case as % of current = 0.81%
some improved, some died it seems, current death toll 72

That's terrible Mr. Gundam. Shouldn't heart surgeries fall under absolutely necessary?

I'm not considered emergent yet, ie. life threatening and they're also afraid of exposing me to Covid-19. University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle is Ground Zero. They're the ones doing the drive thru testing you hear about. They'll get the worst cases. They're also the place where you go for heart valve replacement surgery. It also happens to be my neighborhood hospital where I go for all my health care. We live about a mile away. The fear is things ramp up and they have to use the Cardiac ICU and OR for Corona patients and they don't want me near them. It's a balancing act within a shit show and uncertainty.

Italy likely has very unreported stats on the younger end.
A high rate of completely absent or very mild symptoms likely that is potentially quite contagious.

One guy who recovered from it was saying that he was given the test mostly because he ended up in the ER with pneumonia, but it'd have been difficult to get tested if he was just home with a mild cold, even if positive. (His assumption, of course)
I mean it makes sense if you have a country-wide lock down, to not test every single person with a cough, but it also makes reporting the number of new contagions seem sort of pointless, in the grand scheme of things.

Here's the vid. btw, but it's in Italian.

I would imagine the positive test stats still give some idea of how far it is spreading. If you conducted 2000 tests a day and every single one came back positive, it certainly says something different than having the same number of tests and only 10% being positive even if the exact level of contagion might only be an educated guess for scientists then.

A lot of national curves being similar and consistent seem to suggest they're somewhat accurate at gauging the crisis.

There's also some correlation (though with some variability), apparently, to the number of deaths and the strain on national healthcare. The countries in Asia that seemingly had the best response so far don't have their hospitals clogged by severely ill patients.

I feel there was little official communication anywhere on such speculations apart from the state of Ohio projecting that 100k people maybe already had it within their jurisdiction a few days ago. I mean the virus may have started doing the rounds in Europe as far back as January before the Chinese appraised how severe the issue was and started lockdown everything.

Also controversies are heating up (though there's been some skepticism since Macron said they would go through) suddenly about keeping the mayoral elections planned for tomorrow. The French authorities say they followed the scientific advice and consulted with the opposition but a number of experts and political figures (including MPs and region presidents) are making noises tonight.

It's pretty clear French authorities are reacting, the ramping up in just a few days, between Macron's address and now, has been drastic. But to be honest there's some truth to the Prime Minister words that some of us took things too lighty until now. Some bars in Paris are still packed right now even.

Hopefully this health crisis will trigger a widespread debate about healthcare.
We're also looking at a massive stimulus package all over Europe, political authorities will be incentivized to open up the coffers, would probably be a good idea to use that goodwill to not only try to compensate for the current stress but also to invest in a more resilient society.

Here's the problem though. Italy and France are broke.
Germany and the Dutch ain't paying unless Berlin controls the French budget from Brussels. That's always been the issue in European politics.
The French want to share their debt with the Germans through Euro bonds and the Germans only want that if the French give up their budget control and reform.

We'll likely bail out the airlines before they collapse and then the debt must be paid with austerity.
Savings are worthless with interest rates near 0 and what little was saved is wiped out.
Our government has said we can take a 90 billion Euro hit.

Italy essentially nuked their own economy. Some economists estimate it will take decades to recover.

I think we come from different places on how we view this and what qualify as "broke". Yes the economy will take a beating everywhere. But we have already seen European governments pledge to massive help package and mandate easier access to loans. European nations are some of the wealthiest of the world and have some of the best infrastructure and assets. It won't be wiped away because of a stoppage of a couple months. I think by and large the citizenry will lean towards solidarity and healthcare, research and international coordination will jump back to the forefront of political debate.

I know the exact effectiveness of masks is up for debate but they do provide some mitigation and probably serve as a reminder to the wearer and other possible to behave a certain, cautious, way. It should probably be on the table that mask use (and consequently, supply) should become more common for the next crisis. That's just to discuss a minor adjustement.

This is a game changer, if only for promoting easier access to working from home for instance. Especially if the US gets hit extra hard because of the rather poor -as far as we can tell- response.

If this thing lasts longer than two weeks the economies of already weak countries are completely fucked.
With Lagarde at the helm of the ECB everything will turn to shit soon enough. Every time she speaks the markets tumble.

https://twitter.com/FortuneMagazine/status/1238627163835969541

She basically told Italy it was their own problem.

That's why the English left. Everyone knows the Eurozone floats on Germany, The Netherlands and the Nordic countries.
If Italy defaults it'll be domino day across southern Europe. The Greek fire sale is peanuts compared to what's coming.

Germans will be happy though, cheap exports.

This seems likely.
Some places I read placed patient zero in November. With how contagious this stuff is I really feel the Chinese numbers are underreported considerably.
Probably quite a few people out there maybe in February in Italy had a cold that wasn't actually a cold.
