3 hours in and I can tell this will be a story far better than P4 :lawd
I'm already liking the cast far more than Persona 4.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
To be fair: I prefer Persona 3 in the "Nu"Persona trilogy so far. So anything is better than Persona 4 as far as I'm concerned.
Also once you get around 4/15-ish in dates, the localization gets less bad. Why the opening is so bad is a complete mystery. Also holy hell is the "tutorial" long. I'm like 6 hours in and it's still explaining elements of the game to me. Atlus, I've already played Persona before: Let me blow through these tutorials and just blow through the days quickly so I can dungeon spelunk to Pokemon collect. :-\
Make sure to get the s link with the clinic lady asap for some good sp regen accesoires
That's the plan. Though I'm slightly following the GameFAQ's guide to get Max S.Link's/Commu's this playthrough so I don't ever have to worry about that again. :doge
But yeah, I'm kinda pissed that Hard mode gives you less exp and does more damage in even the first dungeon/tutorial dungeon. I had to turn the game down to Easy to beat the first mini-boss spoiler (click to show/hide)
Archangel
because the tutorial's "LOL JUST GUARD WHEN HE CHARGES UP!" meant on Hard you'd get one-shotted easy because he'd be doing 140 damage compared to the like... 40 damage on easy. :doge #WTFAtlus #FreshPlaythroughBalanceMatters

against them. They'd sometimes get pissed, call reinforcements and then I'd just rinse and repeat the money giving while taking some minor damage. :lol )
AFAIK, you can only "Baton Pass" 3 times. It powers up from the ONE-MORE person to the second person, then GREATLY increases healing and power for the third person. You can't baton-pass past that point and it's only for the ONE MORE turn, so if you play your cards right and Baton Pass GREATLY to a Mediarama person, you'll heal massively for the cost of like 10SP. Nothing to sneeze at.
The "Gimme More" skill you get from... forgetting the S. Link and other things that open up later REALLY show that Atlus shouldn't have gated the game as hard as they did. Unlocking these abilities makes the dungeon grinding WAY more fun. I didn't know I wanted Baton Pass until now, but holy shit where was this in my life for Persona 3-4? :doge
I gotta steal the treasure but I think I'm going to do that the end of May. I'm at 5/25 now.
Since everyone and their gender pronoun are using guides for this game, is it safe assumption to just do what people did via the Network feature?
No, since sometimes a majority of folks went to work instead of buffing their character's social stats that day. Maybe it'll equal out, but I wouldn't trust the Thieves Guild myself.

i got to a point in the palace where there was a real world obstacle and Morgana made us leave. Then the party got split up. Ann and Morgana in reality trying to unlock the door and myself and Ryuji in the metaverse waiting for the door to open. We passed through the door and the guard on the other side just wipes Ryuji and me out within 3 turns. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. Ann and Morgana were my healers. I have no health items. The game literally gave me no chance to buy anything between the time we left the metaverse and when we returned. At first I thought the guard was supposed to be unbeatable and that dying would trigger a cutscene. But, it just goes to the game over sequence. What the fuck? There's no way I can beat that guard with just me and Ryuji and there is no point in falling back to a recent save since the game forces me to proceed with no opportunities to buy supplies. Either there is a gimmick weakness I haven't found or the game has completely screwed me.

Ann and Morgana were my healers.
Well, there's your problem. You have the "power of the wild-card." Get a Persona with healing to support yourself. Fuse on debuffs (defense, primarily) and/or buffs for your characters.
1. Rakunda from your healing and that skill Persona fused Persona.
2. SKULLCRACKER (or whatever physical you have on Ryuji)
3. PHYSICAL persona (switch if needed, you can switch once per turn) to help Ryuji out. If you/he are critical/damaged heal instead (make your guesses on this).
BAM. Done.
Welcome to SMT, where buff/debuffs help.

Are you on Hard? What is your level? Do you have several personas close to your level? I don't remember that fight being too difficult.
Also this. If you're playing on Hard, you're probably screwed given the meager EXP given.
and there is no point in falling back to a recent save since the game forces me to proceed with no opportunities to buy supplies.
You should have a save before this point. If you overwrote you being in the dungeon... well... oops? :-\ That said, AFAIK you should be able to go to the Velvet Room outside of the dungeon in May. So if you have a save befored this forced segment, check and see if you can explore the town. Go to Shibuya Central Street (or whatever the mall and movie place is) and the Velvet Room will be right near the gun store. Go in there and fuse.
I like Sojiro a lot, is like a more assholish Dojima, but his spoiler (click to show/hide)
adoptive daughter is super lame, even with the sad backstory and her moe design. Her dungeon being a nest of high level demon's without elemental weakness sucked my enjoyment of her arc.
Makoto is still the Queen of the game, Ryuji is better than Yosuke and Yusuke is the best male character of the game .
Gallows option opened up in the Velvet room and I killed not one but 2 treasure demons instead of talking to them while in Momentos :snoop
You need spoiler (click to show/hide)
Frei/Nuclear
elements to knock the second dungeon one down. I dunno if that holds the same for Mementos or the other dungeons. Just FYI.
Also you can resummon them from the Compendium AFAIK, which makes the Strength S. Link challenges muuuuuch easier to do.
Also before I forget: If you go to the Velvet Room in the afternoon/outside of dungeons it doesn't pass time (outside of Persona 3-4's infamous S. Links from there). So you can fuse, resummon Personae as you need them for S. Links, provided you're not put on rails for that day/evening. :doge
4 probably was more personal. On average its side s-links might have been a little better too. I don't think any of the side stuff in P5 has hit as hard as when I befriended that super old woman in P4 and realized she was the "Death" arcana.
I ranked the politician dude all the way up since he doesn't bullshit you around. One meeting, one s-link level. None of that "I feel our relationship may get stronger soon" nonsense. Kind of a cool side story. It's not up there with the best side s-links in 3 or 4, but I liked it. I miss the heavenly music you'd get in P4 when you maxed out an s-link though.
Im liking Tae SLink a lot, is not particularly gut punching or heartwarming but it shows how she is warming up to the MC, and spoiler (click to show/hide)

Derp, lets rush at gangsters and get them to take me to their boss. What can go wrong!?
#BadEnd #Dead
Yeah Oni is bullshit.
Status ailments+psi and insta-kills. Either way they can suck up a lot of SP.
Honestly, once I got my head around killing their healers/High Pixies, it wasn't that bad. Especially since a group of 3 High Pixies basically Dormina'd my entire party to full health and SP to continue to grind.
So I've got like 250,000¥. 100,000 of which goes to a S. Link in a few days, the rest I can spend on SP regen items or save for S. Links. I'll probably hold off until I take his heart on getting the SP regen items just to make sure I'm not hitting poor. But I'm going to trade Edgy Potter's Invigorate 1 SP Regen item in for the Invigorate 3 one so I don't have to (*knock on wood*) worry about SP problems using him like the P3/P4 protagonists via switching Personae like it's going out of style in battles to one-more everything possible.
Confusing the mid-bosses like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDI26iyW_Vg
in the main dungeons works wonders. You don't have to go to Momentos like that "guide"/video says to do. You can confuse some of the mid-bosses in the story dungeons. The problem is grinding the cash to resummon the Persaonae you're using for this up in Luck with the resummoning it (to reset cooldowns) and summoning the treasures to Luck EXP buff it.
My party has been since starting: Yusuke, Ann, and Makoto since the later two are healers and Makoto is Nuclear element damage (and has a all Nuclear hit skill that I didn't have for a while). I subbed Yusuke and Makoto out for Ryuji and Morgana for the spoiler (click to show/hide)

What you need to do is do Operations Maidwatch. Then you call her up on the Phone with the appropriate guts. So fistful should be able to do it. You need cash 5,000¥ or so every visit though.
Well, this hasn't triggered for me yet. Is it triggered at a certain s-link level for Ryuji? I'm at 3 I believe.
Not that I'm aware of.
Just checked the guide:

Maid event
This is one of the events where I found a flaw with my schedule. During this scene, you get the opportunity to compliment Ryuji. Doing so actually causes his next rank up to occur one event sooner than what I have listed. To stay completely the same with the schedule, you will have to pass on earning these bonus points. In the future, I'll be looking into adding this response to save even more in-game time.
Anyway, get 5million-ish¥ off an hour of confusing one of the early Mementos bosses. :rejoice
I don't have to worry about money again. But I kinda want to grind that last 4 million out. :doge
Which? I'm gathering targets for a Momentos run now via getting info from working jobs (I might be too late :'( )
I'm not sure of it's name, to be honest. But it's like the second boss you fight in Mementos. I'd suggest just confusing each boss and if it sticks, do that.

Was this really worth wasting an entire week? Morgana spends the entire game being a condescending, pompous control-freak, and I'm supposed to feel bad for him once he realizes he may not be as important as he thought he was? We waste an entire week chasing this fucker when we could've just sat down and talked about it, you know, like EVERY FUCKING MISSION WE DO IN PALACES AND MOMENTS, YOU KNOW, THE FUCKING GAMEPLAY MECHANIC YOU'VE IMPLEMENTED? -Your party knows that other people know about the Metaverse
-Your party knows that somebody powerful had Futaba's mom killed because of her research into the Metaverse
-Your party knows that someone else has been going into the other palaces and likely causing mental breakdowns
-Your party knows that Okumura was directly involved in hiring people to use the Metaverse to take out people standing in his way
-Your party specifically mentions that they want part of Okumura's confession to reveal who is behind the mental breakdowns
And yet, somehow, despite all this, they are STUNNED when Okumura gets iced before he can reveal the plot and it takes them several days before they even begin to start piecing this together. Come on, fam. :neogaf
Yeah, good luck even getting your full party to rank 10 on first play without a guide. I think I maxed around 14-16 of the S-links in the end of my first run. Using a guide for first run seems counter-productive in a game that's so story based and your own experience based on your daily choices.
Oh yeah, that was another beef I had with P5 in that (rank 10 party member spoilers)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
They locked the Persona upgrades behind an optional thing instead of making it part of the story where an event happens and they get their upgrade like a mech show. Seems like an necessary change. I only got about half my team to rank 10 in the end and had to youtube what the other upgrades look like.
P6 should be in a university setting.
In my opinion P5 is a college game. They couldn't "say" it was college because then it would sell 10 copies in Japan instead of 600k (college is not popular in Japan), but the characters look in the 18-22 range outside Futaba, they act like 18-22 year olds, and everything is more grown up compared to P3/P4. I felt it was pretty much a college-era Persona game and was happy about it.

re: the Kobayashi "reveal" during the aftermath- it is simultaneously the best and most awful thing about this game.
It's the best because it's incredibly intricate and well done. It's the worst because IT'S SO NOT FUCKING BELIEVABLE IN THE LEAST.
Someone earlier in the thread said something that was dead on: P5 is fatlus wanting to make a game about college students or adults but being shoehorned into a game about high schoolers. Literally nothing that's happened so far makes you (or me, I guess) seriously believe this bunch of morons is capable of figuring that out and then pulling off the solution for it. Well, except for Futaba, but she's a walking macguffin, so whatever.
In fact, the most believable character is also the most obnoxious and least likable: Ryuji. He behaves EXACTLY LIKE you'd expect a typical teenager to behave in all situations.
Anyway, maybe this is just a byproduct of the fact that it's been about 7-8 years since I've played a Persona game, but I feel like the teams and stories in P3 and P4 were MUCH more believable as teenagers. I think a lot of that was due to the stories that they were trying to tell, if I remember correctly. P5 is them trying to do something way more intricate and it doesn't come off as believable, at least not to me.
I'm not trying to say the game is shit, I'm still enjoying it a whole lot, but ehhhhhh. Finding it to be less and less so as it goes on.

:confused There is a Save Room right in the room before you do the Boss Rush?
Where usually a high level shadow wanders, and the game doesn't tell you that there is something more than the standard gimmicky sub boss fight of that dungeon.
You're talking the High Roller level of the dungeon, right? There's three save rooms, one near the Elevator (which you can hit with no shadows), one near the start of the dark room (which you can hit with no shadows), the one near the Arena (which you can hit with no shadows). Unless I'm misunderstanding you and the area: There's nothing stopping you from saving before that part?
No, I'm talking about the dungeon after that.
Oh, that.

Wasn't that bad on Easy. Maybe on Hard or Normal it's tough. But the first round gives you fodder enemies you've fought 4-5 times already so should have the weakness. The rest is simply healing up (Makoto and Morgana should be in your party with AoE heals for this, I used Yusuke but Ryuji for physical attacks works as well) and Dekaja'ing them to massive damage.
Not that bad, IMO.

Is it worth dropping one of my regular teammates for Akechi? I have my 3 regulars s.links maxed so they have all the special moves unlocked. Basically, are demons with light/curse weaknesses going to be prevalent in the 6th palace?
Yes.
They're probably the best party member in the game because they are able to work 2-3 elements. Their all-out attack win animation is :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl and generally they're good. I'd include them, but: spoiler (click to show/hide)
don't throw anything you want to keep (ie: SP regen items) on them as they leave at the end of the dungeon
.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Do they leave after you find a path to the treasure or after the palace boss?
But yeah, thank you. Ryuji will need to sit the bench for a while.
I didn't start to genuinely like Akechi until spoiler (click to show/hide)
is revealed to be Adachi 2.0 and his Freudian excuse to be an asshole
. Makoto is not Chie, but she has her awesome moments.
I wouldn't see it as anything more than a passing reference, in that case. Given how spoiler (click to show/hide)
the twins merge into an entirely different person.
There's also the fact that spoiler (click to show/hide)
Igor isn't the real Igor for a while and Igor is a subordinate to Philimon in Persona 1-2.
So if anything, they'd be sub-sub-servant to Philimon. Which reminds me, where the hell has Philimon been since Persona 2.
^ Also before I forget, I wouldn't consider P4U/2 cannon despite Atlus saying otherwise. I mean:
Persona 4 spoilers:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Adachi breaks out of prison to bro it up with the main character and defeat a McGuffin before going back to jail. So the shadow execution network would only be for the Dark Hour and/or the TV world and not the Metaverse anyway.
There's also the fact that IIRC Persona 5 started development BEFORE these titles in terms of pre-production and design. So that little story-bit from those wouldn't factor in.
Oh my bad for spoilering that for you, I guess. I thought you finished. :doge
spoiler (click to show/hide)
It was really obvious that Igor isn't who he really is when he says he has no faith in you and I didn't care about being spoiled on the twins, so it's all totally fine.
That part near the endgame
spoiler (click to show/hide)
really blew me away. I thought Igor was just re-cast since his voice actor died (Japanese VA) after P4 and they were going for a different feel as respect for the old VA instead of just getting someone to copy his voice. Then HOLY CRAP IT'S ACTUALLY A PLOT RELEVANT TWIST omggggg; yeah that's like next level meta shit. Between that and the fairly smart explanation of how the Protag survived the Adachi thing, I thought P5's plot writing was really clever.
Until the final end boss where:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
It got all dumb and gody. I've grown to accept the final segment of the game, but at the time I really disliked how the plot went from being a cool Lupin-esque human plot about people and populism and you beat down Shido and it's all awesome and then...OH NO IT WAS ALL REALLY EVIL SUPER GODS PLAN NO GOTTA FIGHT FATE BLAH BLAH BLAH edgy jrpg shit. I know P4 had that too with the true ending, but it was more of an optional afterthought there. I didn't like how it was forced into the main plot this time.
That endgame bit is my only problem with the plot, otherwise I think it's a real good story for an rpg
The final plot twist was integrated way better than P4, given how much Mementos and Morgana were still unresolved but not put aside until the end. I think that is also mentioned by the spoiler (click to show/hide)
Demiurge that while he knew people will still be apathetic after Shido confession, the ball was still in humanity desire to be controlled. The fact that the gang still need to "fight" against the system to get the MC out of juvie feels like a way to say "still your responsibility to get things better"
At least you don't need to talk with a minor NPC to get the true ending.
I hit lvl 10 for Strength...ah, wow.
:neogaf :leon
Why no romance option, tho? :idont

Can confirm that it is possible to max all S.Links, read all the books, play all the videogames, hit a homerun in the batting cage, and catch the Guardian of the Pond in one run. :expert
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yes, of course I used the FAQ, but the FAQ doesn't allow time for catching the Guardian. I actually got behind on the FAQ at first because I forgot to match Arcana when I was doing S.Links and that caused me to get behind on a few of them, but then later in the game I realized the guide didn't take advantage of the Fortune Teller to cheese through S.Links, and doing that let me catch back up and get ahead of the guide, then I used the extra days I had at the end to catch the Guardian. Not a super big-deal, since I doubt I'll ever Plat this game. I don't really have a desire to do a NG+ and derp around Mementos for several hours looking for all the treasure demons to complete the compendium.
Still gotta actually beat the game first, I've only just now started Shido's Palace. 75 hours. :doge
The other day I finally had the MC get one shotted in the 7th dungeon.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Fight against Shido's first form, where he reflects physical. He enraged Edgy Potter, and I attacked and the reflection took me out from full health. WELP.

One of the Mementos shadows in the late game drops Null Phys, use that on whatever Persona you're using for that battle.
Beat it.
Really good game. Didn't enjoy it as much as P3/P4. Not sure if that's due to it being not quite as good or if I'm just not as capable of enjoying things, blah blah blah.

Was anyone else pissed when Morgana showed back up? NO, FUCK YOU CAT STAY GONE.
Tried the flu season reaper trick for kicks
I gained 6 levels in 5 minutes of playtime total :dead
Apparently you can do this on every floor too :neogaf
:whoo
What would this trick be? :dogespoiler (click to show/hide)
jk, I googled it.
How tough is Reaper in a legit fight? He was scary as fuck in P3 until near the very end of the game. Still haven't run into him in Mementos.

I think the 4th palace has the best palace theme of all of them. Fuck is it good.

This soundtrack is great. Meguro still has it.
Oh yeah, beat the game on Sunday. Gueess I should do a little review.

GOTY along with BOTW. Same addictive Persona goodness. I liked (or at least found a positive trait) in all of the main cast, so I wouldn't say I hate anyone in the group. Ryuji is annoying, Yusuke is weird, Makoto Sae is bae, etc.
I think the main idea of the story - of how people are easily swayed by information and how certain information can mutate in order to serve sinister machinations is a great theme to tackle - but it was done so sloppily that I wish they had MGS2-esque Kojima to pen it.
The Akechi characterization in the end was garbo too. At least have him work alongside Yaldo in order to bring about the ordered world he desired instead of him turning into Daddy Issues Baby. Could have been a great one on one fight with the protag in the prison in order to revive the real Igor.
Played on Normal like a pleb but I felt like the battles were still too easy for the majority of the playthrough. Once you get the SP bands, you can pretty much reach the treasure within a day.
Otherwise, awesome stuff. Some of the dungeons were annoying - most particularly the Space Station. But I liked them for the most part. S-Links unlocking new mechanics was also a nice touch. Group dynamics outside of the main story could have used some work but otherwise good shit.
Yosuke seems like a huge taco. Can't wait to never use him.

Mishima is the most realistic character in the game; an annoying teenager that acts as he does for understandable reasons

He seemed unwilling to stand up for himself. It was more frustrating to watch than anything.
When I disliked Mishima for having those character traits it is only because I have some of the character traits myself but wish I didn't. Self hate and all that.

I knew it had to be Akechi. He came off as a snake from the jump.
So I'm 75 hours in, spoiler (click to show/hide)
got the five letters and ready to send the calling card for the ship dungeon.
...but I still have ony one skill at 5/5 (one is even 3/5 still) and I only completed two or maybe three confidants. I'm trying not to spoil the rest of the game, but will I have the time!? I feel like I'm running out...
My dream is a game like Persona mechanically, but with a completely different setting, and the highscool kid shit is replaced with adults at jobs, at a job. Persona 1 and 2 didnt have an emphasis on highschool kids i believe?
I dunno. Theres a lot of neat stuff you can do with Persona's mechanics and style of game. Ditch the kids, introduce the grind, pain, and pleasures of adult life.
There's this Persona spinoff called Shin Megami Tensei you should look into. spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just make sure you get Maruki up to Level 9 before the 19th. :doge
As far as what's in store,

Let's just say it's a better exploration of trauma than a certain "prestige" video game released this month has been.
˄just a badly written summation of my opinion on it, no story spoilers
Yep, got the doctor to 9 and maxed out Akechi as far as I could. Kasumi 's link stopped at 5, hoping that was not something I fucked up. They've been spoiler (click to show/hide)
teasing her has a new squad mate for like, 2 dungeons now.
The hype was real, you brehs were right. The concept was cool. Yoshizawa is great. All the new music was great. P5R is the best Persona title now as far as I'm concerned.
Royal is really what P3FES's The Answer should have been. They knocked it out of the park this time.

I went from hating Akechi in vanilla to have a lot respect for him by the end of this. He was willing to die for his ideals and would rather not exist than be manipulated into living in a false reality. Felt like a very natural conclusion given how he left off in Shido's palace.
