I would assume many victims of anti-semitism and the holocaust actually did have some amount of choice in identifying their own jewishness, it's not always obvious by sight
Some of them wouldn't have known the ultimate consequences of doing so, like their status being on prior census and community lists, but others who knew and made the conscious choice not to deny their faith were incredibly brave, which I think is more heroic than just saying it was imposed upon all of them and no one faced that decision
