I was making some joke to a friend this morning about the prospects of further human evolution and randomly thought of this one-off episode Cartoon Network ran in the mid-90s in which some aliens have enormous foreheads they need to keep propped up with crutches.  Only just now was able to figure out the name.

It's a lot creepier than I remember.

"Oh is that Himu watching our show?"

"Yes. Not via the PBS though, as I see no PBS mug on his desk. Likely an escort of sorts, seeing as he wants to go to the park with us."

"Oh he's the chauffeur then?"

"We are not taking the car. Not from the likes of him. He is pirating the British broadcast by Gods sake!"

"Will we be taking his BBC then?"

Watching Grimm still. The show still rises and falls on the strength of Eddie Munroe and his awesome sweaters.

Also, I've been continually reading AV Club reviews of the shows I've been watching and their reliability has fallen off. They've become like the pitchfork for television. I kind of liked their TV coverage for awhile. They had some perceptive analysis and informative takes on shows. Now its just low level fanboard shit. It feels like they hired new writers who really aren't up to par. One review I read featured the writer going off on a book he had just read, his philosophy and then like a final paragraph of plot summary. It was just a jerkoff session.

Despite being one of the dumbest, most illogical time travel episodes of pure shit to ever grace television.

It sounds a lot like Vanderwerffs usual style.  Also Memles from GAF was hired a while ago, and his posts consistently walk the tight-rope of the typical NeoGAF overly obsessed fan: Incredibly long and still lacking substance.  I would argue that television simply isn't meant to be reviewed on a per-episode basis.

Great ep. Maybe things change in later seasons, but right now I'm not getting the extreme Betty hate I always see online. Draper treats her like shit, and she's like this malfunctioning Stepford wife who realizes no one really cares for her, despite her playing her societal role well.

Same thing with people hating Skylar White, or Tony Soprano's wife...it's like guys root for these male, badass characters and harshly react whenever the wives lash out at how shitty they're treated.

Also, Allison Brie hnnnnngggg. Pete Campbell, what a pathetic dick  :lol :bow

I've been watching a ton of Mad Men this week and am now halfway through the third season.  I really like the show but the first season is still by and far my favorite.  It's like they wrote everything in a nice package for the first season and once AMC gave them the green light for a second season, they said, "Well, where do we go from here?"  Post-season one just seems weird and disjointed at parts, particularly this event:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Where Don/Dick spends three weeks in California impulsively and then all of a sudden he's meeting Betty at the stables.

Still, great show.  Just has some flaws to it.

I've been watching a fair amount of Gangland.  I don't care what anyone says, I like to watch an episode now and then.

I think season 3 is the best season because the characters really grow that season and it has the best drama. Season 1 is very basic. It gets the characters and their personalities down, but they don't really grow as people. Season 2 draws on this further, and finally season 3 has the show turning on all cylinders. I feel season 4 is the weakest season, and I still love it to pieces.

Keep watching, but I feel the same way. I really like Betty and sympathize for her situation.

She's a child, but she only acts like that because society expects her to be. You are taking forever to catch up on Mad Men. Fuck.

But yes, people idolize Walter White, Tony Soprano, and Don Draper despite the fact they are extremely shitty people. Sure, they're COOL shitty people.  But they seem to unanimously take their side despite their wives being neglected and in Betty's case, this is pre-woman power days and she was raised on 50's values that the only thing a woman needs in her life to be happy is a family, kids, and a mean cooking arm. You can tell Betty doesn't even LIKE kids much, but she had them because welp, that's what society expects of her. I find Betty's tale the saddest on the series, because it's the story of a woman who was told how little she was valued and bought into it. This is even more telling in season 3 when you meet Grandpa or on season 2 when they visit Paris.

In reality, the reason Mad Men is the best show on tv is due to how subversive it is at its drama. the shows main setting takes place in an advertising agency; what better place to examine characters who have been sold on something, whether the American dream, or the wonders of having children, or something, it has absolutely failed them, and they can't seem to figure out why they're so unhappy. The show really is about the advertising of life and I think season 3 embodies this aspect the most.

When you think about it, Don's talk about advertising and love pretty much what the main theme of the series is about:

PD: Watch out for "The Suitcase" and "The Summer Man" eps in S4. Hands-down two of the best episodes of TV ever made.

In regards to the wives thing, Betty Draper becomes ridiculous towards the end of S3 and into S4. You root for her in the first two seasons because of how much of a shithead Don is to her, and her lack of agency as a '60s housewife. But in the later seasons she's insufferable.

Skylar, though, oh man, nothing fucking redeems her. She should have moved far the fuck away from Walter when she had the chance.

Hulu web show with Kiefer Sutherland and John Hurt.
Kiefer is a hitman who confesses his sins to a priest (John Hurt). Pretty good. It's an hour long and tells a complete and satisfying story.

And just now I decided to watch season 2 of Stargate: Universe. I watched season 1 like a year ago... and i don't remember a fucking thing about this show. such a bad idea jumping in cold. oh well.

You don't watch on PBS? So far, while not as good as season 1, I think it's still fantastic. I hate how a lot of the character subplots turned into romance stories, the biggest offender being Sybil and Robert - gone are the days when they would introduce interesting political fervor. I also dislike the distinct lack of meddling and scheming in the second season that made the first such a joy to watch.

That said, the 5th episode of the season was perfect  Downton Abbey, with so many twists and turns and pathos up the ass.

I finished S2 in November thanks to icefilms.

S2 felt far more soap-ish thank S1 which was straight up drama, and some of the side stories are straight up ridiculous - so forced and poorly conceived; you'll see what I'm talking about very soon. That being said I thought it was damn good, teared up a couple times, and cheered at the emotional climax

S2's biggest problem is pacing. S1 covers 1912 to 1914 - from the sinking of the Titantic to the start of WW1. S2 covers 1914 to 1918 in the span of 5 episodes, with almost one year passing per episode. This is far too fast paced and confusing for its own good. In one scene Ethel finds out she's pregnant, in the next scene she has a baby. This causes the season feel disjointed and lack the focused direction of S1.

It would be far more realistic for S2 to cover the entire span of the war so everything feels more grounded. That way in s3 they can concentrate on post-war Europe.

Should have gone like this:

S1 - examination of pre-war Britain from the class system to the expectation of women.
S2 - WW1 and it's effects on the Abbey and it's characters.
S3 - post-war Britain and how the war had created a new world with new ideals and the surge of a democratic Europe.

Instead they seem to have went after the shipper demo.

I still like Betty and I hope she finds happiness by the end of the series. :(

How can you like her? She becomes intolerable by the end of season 3. Joan gets difficult to like as well, although

it's hard to hate her after she gets raped by her husband who is bound to die once he gets shipped off

I wish you found out what happened to Sal, that story arc was great. I think his waifu was hot too, but I'd need to go back and re-watch.

Anyway, Pete's secretary (or is it Kenny's?) is one of my favourite characters.

It's not so much like as it is pity :(

Joan is a sad story too.

I like that they don't revisit Sal. With something like that happening to a gay man in the 60's? He's finished.

I'm kind of hooked on Justified. The show also makes me hungry for fried chicken and bourbon. =/ So not healthy.

I've been watching Mad Dogs which is One Damn Thing After Another, The Series.

It's about these four life long friends who have been invited on vacation by their nouveau rich friend to spend some time at his expansive French Villa.  Things go horribly, horribly, horribly wrong in wildly entertaining ways involving serbian mafia, corrupt cops and thinly veiled animosities coming to the surface.  It's a hell of a lot of fun but the ending to the first series is a bit happier than I was expecting.  They recently made a second series which is airing now, which is also quite good in the "hell in a handbasket" mode.
